New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if I'm making this post in the wrong section. I am new to collecting 1:200 models (I collected 1:400 models in the past, but that was a lot easier because so many more manufacturers make those models with high quality), so I was hoping you guys could help me out a bit. First off, I am a huge 747 fan as you might be able to tell from my id- I have flown this aircraft more times than I can count and it still throws me into awe just to see one as it did back when I was a kid. Because (very sadly) I am beginning to see fewer and fewer of these aircraft as airlines begin to retire them, I want to collect these models to preserve all the wonderful memories I have had with this plane. My goal is to collect high quality 1:200 models for all the 747 liveries I have flown in (all are 744s) and here they are: KLM (Current) Lufthansa Cathay Pacific (Current) United (Battleship) Singapore (Megatop) So far, I have the inflight200 Singapore (SMJ), which is a breathtaking model, and I have ordered the new KLM if200 (though I am a bit nervous about the problems in this new guy). Is there any direction you guys can give me regarding how I can collect the other liveries? Like many others here, I have expensive taste but shallow pockets, so my two conditions are: (1) the model is very high detail (inflight, JC wings, herpa premium-which i doubt i will ever get) (2) its not too expensive, which is a very general statement I don't care about exclusivity or anything, so if you guys would say that some of these models would be released by JC wings in their new mold for example, I am more than happy to wait instead of shelling out a couple hundred bucks now. Thanks everyone! Edit: just as a note, I am not asking ppl to sell me their models or anything, just asking for any and all collecting advice you have for me |
Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
Your not going to get them with shallow pockets, Cathay Pacific is acheivable

My advice: Get back into 1:400 before you're $ucked dry.

Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
Haha I guess I should clarify: these are the only 1:200 models I really want to collect. Anything else I am happy to continue with 1:400, but I just want to be able to admire the additional detail on larger 747s.
By not too expensive, I mean not to far above the 200usd range. Say a herpa premium lufthansa popped up, I might make an exception but otherwise, I don't want to blow too much on anything. Considering I have singapore and klm covered, I only have the united, luthansa, and cathay left. As you say the cathay is not too difficult to get, I still need to account for the lufthansa (first priority) and united (second priority). I guess what I mean to ask here is do you think JC wings, inflight or some manufacturer will release these models in the future (maybe you guys can kind of predict this through experience)? If so, I can definitely cough up the retail asking price, but otherwise, I would have to manage with the already available options. I just remember thinking that I would never be able to get a KLM but then inflight decided to release a new one! One last question: what are your thoughts regarding this new KLM? I have read a few threads on here that have me worried, but I am content to keep my order in. Do you guys think they would fix the problems before release? |
Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
try hogan : good quality ,good prices what else ? :D

Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
I don't mind hogan for general 1:200 collecting but I'm looking for only the best when it comes to my 747s. The missing antennae are a big deal breaker for me

You sound just like us last year. Now I no longer have my Model Horse Collection and we have a 747 collection. :D

Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
I too am a 747 enthusiast (I've posted pics of my collection, just do a search).
With regard to your list, the Lufthansa and United "Battleship" are very sought after models, and usually command in the $350 - $500 range, or more. Neither come up for sale often, and when they do, there is inevitably a bidding war. The Cathay Pacific and Singapore "Megatop" can be found relatively easily for less than that. I've seen those models go for around $200. The KLM has just been re-released (several threads currently are active concerning it), and may still be available for pre-order from some retailers. My "Cargo" version was pre-ordered for $159. The original IF200 release reached over $1000 USD prior to the announcement of the re-release. As others have mentioned, your combination of several very popular models + "shallow pockets" does not bode well for your success. Good luck with your search. |
Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
JCs new 744 1/200 is coming, I think their prices will be lower

Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
Great, thanks for the advice. As I mentioned before, I have taken care of the singapore and the KLM and multiple people have told me the cathay is not to hard to get either so I will keep my eye out for one going on sale.
I guess I will have to just wait and hope that inflight re releases or JC wings releases the lufthansa and united, which seems like a decent possibility (especially for the lufthansa). |
Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
With new 747 moulds about to hit 1:200 I have a feeling a lot of the hard to get inflight 200 releases liveries might be easier to get soon.

Interesting as lately on this and the trader section a few 200 scale newbies come aboard and right out of the gate they are in search of some of the most sought after 200 scale models that are the hardest and most expensive to find..its just a weird coincidence that's all, Dont get me wrong I'm not criticizing or finding fault it just seems strange lately..
I'm now motivated, I'm going to go onto an automotive enthusiasts website and say Hi I'm new to driving and owning cars and after careful research I find a handful that fancy me and would like to acquire them at an affordable price in the $75-100K: can anyone out there help me? Re: New Member looking for advice regarding 1:200 744 collection
I think this comes particularly because the 747 is starting to be retired and aviation enthusiasts are turning to models to preserve their memories with this aircraft.
I am not new to the modelling world, just to this specific area. I think I was too ambiguous when I mentioned "inexpensive". I know that all of these are worth quite a lot and when I want something inexpensive, I mean relative to what the model goes for. I consider 350 for a rare lufthansa to be relatively inexpensive (although its a lot of money), while I would consider 350 for say a singapore to be expensive. |
