And also, FedEx has two medium boxes. One works and one doesn’t work but the one that works will fit most narrow bodies in it.

They have a flat rate option called One Rate. It’s $13.50 for Express Saver which is 3 days. It’s great because that will go anywhere in the 48 states and no extended rural charges if you’re shipping to the middle of nowhere but it’s a more expensive model so you want to make sure it actually gets there rather than using Priority Mail.

Firstly, the hobby isn't dying, and 1:200 scale certainly won't meet its demise within the next 24 months. TOGAselected has a unique perspective being in Dubai. As Nick Eberhard pointed out, shipping costs to/from Dubai are far from normal, making Dubai a bit of an anomaly in that regard. For the vast majority of collectors, shipping costs are very reasonable and hardly even factor into a purchase. TOGAselected's experiences are way outside of the norm, and it's imprudent to make outlandish, sweeping generalizations about the hobby as a whole based on those experiences.

Secondly, the original post in this thread is all about secondhand models, and from an international seller (to most people), no less. It's absurd to claim the entire hobby is dying just because the OP has had some difficulties selling some obscure, pre-owned models from a corner of the globe which apparently has outrageous shipping rates. The market for pre-owned models has never been great. There are of course several notable models that have become rare and sell easily for a pretty penny on the secondhand market, but these examples have always been only a small fraction of all 1:200 models. The vast majority simply do not hold their value. That doesn't mean the hobby is dying, it just means that the demand has been met by retailers. I think most collectors are well aware that if they decide to part with a significant portion of their collection, they aren't even going to come close to recouping the initial $$$ they dished out.

Another reason the secondhand market has never been great: when given the option of either buying a model brand-new from a retailer, OR secondhand from a collector instead, most people will opt to buy from a retailer, even if the cost is higher. The reasons are many and obvious: you know you're getting a brand-new model, you're probably covered if the model arrives defective or damaged, and you have peace of mind knowing you're dealing with a legit business who isn't out to scam, will ship right away, etc.

In regard to TOGAselected lamenting the cost of worldwide shipping rising: I don't have the statistics in front of me, but I don't doubt this is true. However, in the U.S. it remains very reasonable. Sure, it's gone up, but EVERYTHING goes up in price. It's called inflation. I'd argue that the MSRP of a Gemini Jets 1:200 model has risen much more than the inflation rate (and shipping costs) in the 7 years or so they've been around. For example, a narrowbody GJ200 retailed for somewhere in the mid to high $40 range back in 2007/2008. Now, those same narrowbody types retail for $60-$70. If that kind of price increase of the models themselves hasn't killed the hobby, then rising shipping costs surely won't.

Anyway, this post is getting rather long, so I'll wrap it up by asking the OP a question in response to this statement of his:

If you had zero interest in those models, why did you buy them in the first place? That makes no sense. Surely you had an interest in them when you acquired them, no? I can't imagining going from "interested enough to spend $100" on a model to "so disinterested, I'd rather throw them in the trash than store them away in a closet." I think every collector who's in the game for a significant period of times goes through slight ups and downs in terms of interest, perhaps takes a break from making purchases, keeping up with new releases and forums, etc. I know I certainly do. But I can't fathom losing interest to the point of throwing my models away. That's just retarded.

One way to get past a "banned".

As to the topic at hand. International shipping is certainly putting a damper on my enthusiasm for buying models.
There are so many being released, who can keep up?
What happened to Phoenix/Eagle models?

A friendly word of warning:
One has to be careful with using UPS to ship into Canada. UPS uses their own brokerage scheme, which then levies a hefty fee to the recipient. The cost to the recipient of model, shipping, UPS levy, plus any Canadian customs/taxes can be rather frightful. After a couple of screamingly ridiculous costing shipments from well-meaning Americans, UPS is TOTALLY off my list.

Just sayin'

It's not only the shipping it's mainly the custom taxes that rip holes in people's wallets big time, due to this reason I try to buy my models within the EU,but if I buy outside the EU and thee shipping from Hong Kong to NL is for example 35 euro and the item is 129 euro the Custom taxes will roughly be around 50 to 60 Euro sometimes even more all depending from how far it is coming from.

As a collectors sometimes you have to make sacrificed to pay for the item you have been looking for, but for many this is barely doable due to the overrated Custom taxes they git above the high shipping costs.
So blame the customers mostly for the cause, they make things more expensive by the year.

But I feel your pain Ukeep, even if the customs were high I'd buy from you any day, your services and packing skills are just worth it
If I can't find a model I'll know who to ask hehe.

But then again everything is getting more expensive it's not only aircraft models but Paleontology quality dinosaur resins, server & computer parts, model trains & cars boats etc , the shipping & Custom tax rates also have been going upwards over the past years.

But even such things won't stop me just yet.

Just as a point of reference GL, I don't sell these things (unless used like others here). I'm just a collector(of modest means) who has gotten stung by nasty shipping in the past.

Is that a stab at AOC? Please keep those sensitive comments out of DA.C, unless they directly effect the hobby. 🇺🇸

Let us hear your opinion of a world without commercial aviation in 10 years DC-10 Tony! If there were no commercial aviation in 10 years do you think many would still collect or would the hobby die?

Tony, let's not be so sensitive that one can't see how this relates to the hobby regardless of who the opinion came from! The main point of no commercial airliners in 10 years gracing the skies of the world and its potential impact on those who are inspired by 1:1 aircraft to collect is an interesting aspect of the thread title. If you have an opinion on how that would impact the hobby lets hear it!

My opinion is it would impact, but not kill, the hobby as those not being able to experience a commercial flight or go to an airport to spot would not be so bitten so to speak by aviation!

I've been there with UPS many years ago. I patted myself on the back for snagging a great deal on some tennis rackets being shipped from the USA to my door. However, when I opened the door it was a UPS delivery gentleman who handed me that shipping/duty/taxes bill. That UPS bill almost cost me the price of 1 tennis racket Since that day, I've avoided any sellers/retailers that use UPS.

UPS is a BIG NO NO for me. I ask people to ship via FedEx. They usually invoice you, but not until AFTER you get your parcel and at a MUCH lower rate than UPS

Any stab at AOC is welcome as far as I'm concerned. How that mindless bimbo got elected to congress completely baffles all sane people, and her ideas are all scary!! 90% tax on the wealthy? Get rid of airplanes and combustion engines within 10 years? Free medical care, free college education for all, including ILLEGAL aliens?
No thanks!!

Just to bring this WHOLE thread back to topic, I'd have to say a little from Column A, and a little from Column B.

The price of models have risen, but I feel shipping has gotten out of hand, especially with retailers who have been offered schemes that turn shipping into a 'profit center'. I think they may be leaning on that a little too hard.

Anyone else — agree/disagree?

Agreed.
The combination of increasing model prices and increasing shipping is turning this hobby into an elitist one.
Sure, certain countries will prevail, but eventually they will feel the pinch too when the global collectorate diminishes to such a point that model production becomes very limited and fewer liveries. That will rise prices for the remaining collectors.

Interesting discussion to return to 5 1/2 years later. I'm happy that 1:200 is still alive and thriving. Someone should direct TOGAselected back to this thread. I wonder if he would eat his crow, or attempt the same sort of logical gymnastics he used when making his stupid prediction in the first place.

I don't know about dying in the next 24 months but I do feel the brakes are coming on. I know personally I don't order form Ebay anymore because of the new tax grab. The shipping has become crazy expensive so that doesn't help. If I really need to get something I order it from local store and hope for the best.

I'd actually think it's the complete opposite. I collect 1/400 and the its booming. Their is alot more completion and choices available and the quality has improved dramatically over the past 2 years.

...what surprises me is in the for sale section and on Ebay I see relatively new releases being unloaded by collectors! I am wondering if they are duplicates picky collectors bought 2 of and are selling the one that did not meet their scrutiny, they changed their criteria, had buyers remorse, saw something they wanted more, laundering money (), or what ever else reason one may come up with?

In my case, it is because Bills have to be paid. Due to health reasons, I left my job.

Thank you all for the kind words. I left my job due to health reasons like I stated. Plus the fact I put on almost 70,000 miles on my car in just over a year, and now having car issues does not help.

I miss my job but it is for the better. I do not want to sell my planes, I sold off a lot in the past and really regretted it and know I will regret it again. So, I am selling off ones that do nothing for me .
