As all of you have hopefully heard by now, Sam, myself and Gordon are working hard on our first release in ten years.
The MD-11 will be our first release and some of you have asked me who's MD-11 we are using, well, it's all ours!
It is our sincere hope to bring back some of the fun into the hobby that seems to have ebbed away a bit over the past few years. The MD-11 is just the beginning, and we will work hard to release product that is without error and well worth your consideration.
With technical help from David Hingtgen, Joseph Santiago, and Darin Kirschner, we are confident that we will reach our goal. Please "like" our facebook page, we will have updates soon and we look forward to hearing from all of you!
Wish you fellows all the very best, its quite a team you have there, looking forward to your MD-11, Delta should be nice to start with! good luck to you all on this new venture!

Great news for the hobby, indeed! What other types besides the MD-11 is SMA planning/considering? It's great to hear that brand-new moulds are being developed with technical help from David Hingtgen and others. Will there be anything different about the production of these models that will set SMA apart from the rest of the herd that uses the same one or two factories in China? Hopefully stricter quality control? Maybe a higher caliber of finishing when it comes to fine detail?
Regardless, I'm glad to see a new competitor enter the market, and I hope SMA succeeds and is able to offer regular releases a la GeminiJets. And keep GJ on their toes, too.
This is great news! Look forward to seeing the first of the MD-11's! You've got David Hingtgen on board, and he has a great eye for accuracy. I wish you great success in your return.
Regards,
Mike

Great to see you back in action. Hoping you will produce 1/400 as well! So many good US domestic models yet to be done from the 70's, 80's, and 90's in 1/400. And still no Dash 7. Good luck to you whatever you produce!
This shot was taken by myself in 1991 on the occasion of Varig's first MD-11 (PP-VOP) arrival and oficial presentation in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Regards,
Ahhhh! My eyes! The cursed Varig MD-11!
Actually a true beuty, I just call it 'cursed' because I used to love the Varig DC-10 'technical stop' at DF Malan (Cape Town International now) on its way back to Rio from Johannesburg. The DC-10 flew straight from Rio to Johannesburg, but didn't have the legs to go all the way back against the prevailing winds.
With the MD-11 they could fly all the way from Johannesburg to Rio, so my only opportunity of seeing a big tri-jet vanished with the arrival of the MD-11.
Beautiful picture. I do miss the big tri-jets(Douglas and Lockheed).
Forgot to add my wishlist for MD-11's....
I would love the Air Namibia or Zimbabwe's Avient aircraft.... :-)

Reason: added my wishlist.
Is there a reason, why they choose to make the MD-11 after Herpa, Hogan, Hobbymaster and JC Wings already did it?
At this point in the game, pretty much every major airliner has already been done by several model manufacturers. There are only so many a/c types out there to choose from. Nothing wrong with developing a brand new mould, though, especially if it's going to be superior to all the other offerings out there. I'm hoping SMA will eventually develop a whole range of their own 1:200 toolings.
As for why they chose the MD-11 first, my bet is David Hingtgen had something to do with it. That guy loves the MD-11.

We want it to look EXACTLY like an MD-11, to the smallest detail that can be feasibly molded/cast. (and as much as Tom etc can get the factory in China to understand what we want/mean!)
Yes, there's already MD-11's out there. But the goal is to have the best one.

I'm so glad you are on board to help them make it right! I bet these models will look stunning!

+1 to all of this. I'm optimistic that SMA will be setting the bar high and usher in a new standard of quality, accuracy, and attention to detail.
When can we expect the first release(s) to be available?
I miss seeing the big KLM MD-11 landing at YVR. It always looked great in that bright blue colour. I'd like to see a release in that livery. American or Delta would be great too, but my favourite scheme is Alitalia:
I also love the MD-11 and look forward to this production.
Maybe after the MD-11 you can start on another of my favorites to make an accurate replica of the 707/720. Lots to choose from there. We need a new accurate 707.
