Default Cleared for takeoff - Gemini A330-200 Hawaiian

Testing my new runway with a Gemini A330.

Don't mind the wavy appearance - it's just a test on cheap paper, picture taken without tripod. Final optics will improve once printed by a professional company

2.5 m (~100 inch) x 0.6 m print - but can you guess which airport this is?

Cheers
Chris

Very realistic. It reminds me of my helicopter photo shoot over LAX in February.

Hmmm. If you were selling that I'd buy it.

Especially if you printed it on a nice thin piece of well cut polycarbonate, with all the details, no warping.

I'd probably drill little holes in the runway and add blue LEDs. Very very cool.

Thanks a lot guys!

It could be for sale soon. Problem is finding a professional printer capable of printing a single 2 GB file!
I want to iron out some details. Of course, I spottet them just after printing everything...

Print(s?) will be done in 2800 dpi resolution with pigmented inks (= no fading) on solid (=thick) photographic (=ultrasmooth) paper with an ultra-flat finish laminated for protection. That means maximum quality and a smooth, wavy-free (is that a word?) appearance.

The file was made on a computer (d'uh ) and the layered file has a size of, ahem, 27 GB... I guess that is a new record for me. It is way beyond huge!

Stay tuned!

And you are right, it is KLAX! Suits my other foil from KLAX:

Cheers
Chris

Stunning.

Where did you get your source material?
Or is this google maps satellite material which you used to blend to each other?

Or did you get professional airpictures of the airport?

Because this brings me on idea's for a 1/400 foil

Google is used as a base to get all dimensions right, everything else is handpainted in a graphics program as Google pics are way too low resolutive.

That's the trick, but I cannot tell how many hours it takes. FYI Opening the file alone takes about 1 1/2 h now.

Strange hobby, I know.

not a strange hobby...

I once converted more than 200 files from FS-scenery airport to bmp-file for a fellow member...
Maybe once I will use them for making an airport... If I have time

But I'm really interested in making groundfoils myself... So I will try what you are doing with a part of EBBR.

Which program do you use for the overlay and making the lines better?

You can go with any graphics program which supports layers, e.g. Photoshop or Photopaint. Just be aware you have to redo everything, i.e. all the concrete or asphalt areas have to be redone, not just the lines.

First I have to figure out how I can download the images from google maps
I used to have a program for that (MOBAC) but the latest version does not allow downloading the Google maps

Use the print key on your keyboard.
Google (or Bing or whatever displays the best view) is just usable as a basic layouting help. It tells me where to put lines, lights and other details. Most sat views are low-res anyway (calling NSA may help here... ). If you are lucky you can use the sat view for basic coloring, but I discovered that even the colors are sometimes way off...

Thumbs up Nice runway mat

Cool stuff!!!

Nice mat you did there, looks so realistic. How expensive would be to order one mat like this to you? This is cool, nothing related to Gemini Jets mat carpets, this is way off. I could sell my Gemini mat and get this instead.

Same runway - 500 meters apart

I revised the file and it looks really great now. I was able to print it in one piece too. Please note, my print is still semi-gloss!

If you are interested in aquiring a copy send my a private message (I did find a company able to print the whole file in one go - 2800 dpi print resolution, pigmented inks to prevent fading, solid photographic smooth paper, ultra-flat finish coating for protection).

(see more here!)

Cheers
Chris

Nice idea. I have thought about using lighting that way. Just remember blue is only for taxiway edge lights. Lead off lights and taxiway center lights are green. Runway threshold lights are green at the approach end and red at the departure end. Runway edge lights will be white or amber depending on where they are. Runway touchdown zone is white and runway centerline white or red again depending on where you are and the direction your looking.

You can find all this online if your serious about lighting your airport. I believe the Aeronatical Imformation Maual is available online. You can learn about signage there as well. I would love to see some photos if someone decides to light up their field.

How'd you get your groundfoil to turn out that clear! I've tried using Google Earth for my foils, but they NEVER turn out that way!

He said he hand painted them on a photo making program.

"Print(s?) will be done in 2800 dpi resolution with pigmented inks (= no fading) on solid (=thick) photographic (=ultrasmooth) paper with an ultra-flat finish laminated for protection. That means maximum quality and a smooth, wavy-free (is that a word?) appearance."

Nice work EMD! The diorama with the Pan Am 727 is amazing and your lighting is perfect! I made a ground foil using Google Earth maps and pasting the screenshots onto a Power Point Presentation, then fitting the pieces like a puzzle. The results are nowhere near as good as yours. Amazing how large your file has gotten! I love the base with the Qantas birds!
