Default The diecast A380 will ring in the new year!

Just had an interesting conversation earlier today with another collector. Looks very good that the long awaited diecast 1/200 A380 will be landing sometime in the new year (January or February release). Would have been great for a xmas present to myself, but I don't mind if it touches down in 2013. Hopefully it will be the Emirates A380 (since they have the largest A380 fleet and just opened an exclusive A380 terminal in Dubai; and also we (my family) flew on the Emirates A380 2 years ago). Cheers! T7

My source informed me that he spoke to a gentleman who just recently handled the 'sample', and passed the 'possible' dates for either Jan or Feb 2013 public release. Singapore would also be a great choice = 1st to fly the A380!

Cheers! T7

I have a feeling that it should come from G200, based on them having released 3 versions of the Emirates T7; and they have done about 14 1/400 models for EK to date. Cheers T7

Wow a diecast A380. A diecast b744 already cost quite a sum, I wonder how much would a380 cost???

Not to mention the cost to package and ship it, and flattened tires on the model due to the weight of it when displaying...

I agree, should tip the scales at a hefty weight. Probably just a tad heavier than the C-17 that Gemini 200 produces. Cheers! T7

Why not diecast it with aluminium like the GJ A320 mould? It is much lighter.
A SQ or TG will do me a favour as I will be flying both of them in December.

They probably will use a lighter metal such as aluminum.

I believe when the fuselage is cast it will be done with an aerated/lightweight casting metal. This will reduce the weight of the A380 to make shipping costs more practical. The size of the box will be huge.
I have a Qantas Herpa A380 and that came in a pretty big box. Gemini or InFlight with their poly foam packaging will make for an even bigger box.
That said look at the size of Corgi's boxes for their 1:72 B17's and Lancaster's. Sturdy box with a molded poly form interior and a sizable diecast model inside. It didn't cost a king's ransom to ship from the US to Australia.

I would go for one in house or Air France colors. Though, I'd be more keen on an AF 747-400.

Posted this in the other thread.
Diecast A380 -
Possible Liveries:

Singapore Airlines
Qantas
Korean Air
China Southern
Lufthansa
Emirates
Emirates Rugby World Cup
Air France
Malaysian
Thai
British Airways
Airbus house colours

And coming soon -

Qatar Airways
Etihad
Asiana
Transaero
Skymark Japan (may never be delivered)
Kingfisher (will never be delivered)
Air Austral (may never be delivered)
FedEx (fantasy scheme, for now)
UPS (" likewise)
Hainan Airlines / Air Hong Kong (under threat but will likely be completed once China sorts out the EU ETS)
VIP bird for the Saudi King
Vietnam Airlines (may never be delivered but sure would sell well)
Virgin Atlantic (" ditto likewise)

Plus the likelies over the next few years -

Turkish Airlines (very likely to order the bird with/without some 747-8is by year end)
Air China (rumoured to be done and dusted pending resolution to the EU ETS thing)
KLM (long rumoured, no reason why they cant make a small fleet of 5 work)
Cathay Pacific (likely to take the A380-900 as soon as it is ordered, but may take a A380-800R version if Airbus launch it)

Some very cool liveries there to do, I can see why they invested in the mould. Lets hope its a really good one and not massively flawed like the GJ 77W mould. I'm sure it will be a hugely impressive model regardless, though interestingly probably not going to be a big seller in the US. Generally the US collectorate and wider air enthusiast community there view the A380 very negatively and are unlikely to shell out $150-170+ for a plane they love to despise. The amount of abuse the A380 gets on A-net is unbelievable.

I'm sure the rest of the world will take up the slack though!

Personally I'd go with the majority here and say it will be an aluminium model for sure.

Price point will be interesting though. If a brand new 77W from GJ is about £79 / $125, you'd reckon on this being considerably more expensive.

$160-175 perhaps?

Any higher and folks just won't be able to buy one. Its tough times out there and I know a lot of collectors spend $170 a month on models, a lot of us do at least, but a monthly allowance or the bulk of one at any rate on one model? Hmmm. I think takeup will be massive but I dont think it will be a must-have for most.

I see a diecast A380 doing very well in Asia. I expect the vast majority will be bought up by the Evilbayers in Hong Kong etc to drip drip onto the market for vastly inflated prices for those collectors who just cannot do without one.

I dare say I'll be asking my supplier in the UK to just pre-order me every single one that comes out. I'd buy them all. Simple as that.

A diecast A380 is - for me - a must have. I suspect we'll have diecast A340s as well before too much longer as well.

An Emirates would be my personal fave, followed by Singapore, Malaysian, Qantas, Korean and Air France. Thai very beautiful as well.

I wonder if one would fit on one Detolf shelf?

The GJ 77W is excellent bar none, except for the engines is is already a topic beaten like a dead horse in this forum.

Id be happy to see the price between $140-$170USD for a job well done die cast A380, regardless of manufacturer. Let it be hobby master, or GJ, whatever, as long as it is fairly accurate and not too price hefty, I'm in.

Hi there,

Any ideas who will be building it?

Personally, I'd cross my fingers for inflight200

Does anyone have any pictures they could share or any ideas when we can expect an official announcement?

I'm not so much in fantasy liveries. But SIA would indeed be a great entry in the world of diecast A380s.

A380, MD-11, A330/A340 and much more stuff to be released next year probably. So if the Maya were not right with their calendar I'll get killed by collection agencies and/or my girlfriend no later than 2013

This has been an interesting thread to date with many DAC collectors/members speculating on the airline and the manufacturer for the first diecast 1/200 A380. I hope that all airlines operating the A380 will be made (I think there are 9 airlines currently operating this big bird ). For some reason, I think that Gemini 200 will be the 'roll-out' company that will introduce the EK A380. They make great 1/200 models and at a reasonable price. Later down the road, I could see JC Wings delivering Singapore or Korean. Inflight 200 could produce the Qantas. So many possible airlines next year with the A380, should be a fun 2013, and depending on how many different A380s = could be an expensive 2013 for A380 collectors! Cheers! T7

yes i also think the perfect first release should come from gemini200, emirates a380. after all emirates is the largest a380 customer, and gemini200 have released 777-300ERs in emirates' livery as well.. as u guys have said i really hope its not inflight because that just would be tooooooo expensive for meeeee!! haha
