Exclamation Risen large airplane models SUCK

For those who don't know, the large 1/200 scale planes such as those offered by PCM which are made from resin are crap!!

They don't seemed to have their weight distributed well and ALL three models i have have broken, two in shipment and one while on display. This one broke due to a quick jolt cause by a cat when i went to take it down from the display area, the cat grabbed for the nearest thing which turned out to by the AN-225. The plane didn't fall and the only thing it hit was some old cardboard!!! The left wing & right rear horizontal stabilizer broke

In the same incident a Hogan B747 model fell over 5ft to a wood floor and the only problem was the wing rear landing gear popped off (not broken!!)

Buyers BEWARE about the larger resin planes!!

Plastic model airplanes are not paper airplanes, they dont fly.

How do you expect them to fair when they are treated like you say. They are not made from steal re-enforced concrete. Diecast would do the same too.

Do you have a topic where you dont attack a company?

I guess the lesson here is to make sure that cat and model never meet. Would it not be possible for your models to go into some kind of showcase, although I know they can be very expensive. I'm lucky I guess, insofar as I have a room solely for my models to live in. Cats, and we have 3 of the 'little darlings' are strictly forbidden to enter. But of course, that just makes them more curious about what's behind that door, opening the door to go in or out, can be a very stressful task as at times they seem to 'congregate' just outside the door every time I use it....Bless 'em

The cat problem can be cured by inserting a small lead ball behind it's left ear...

Cats (pets in general) & models do not mix. Simples.

These "cat burglars" have got alot to answer for. They will take anything they can get their "paws" on. Maybe you should get yourself a "dog" of a model and display it so as to scare the cat off.

Thin resin pieces will snap quicker than plastic, but other than that, blaming the company for an accident in your home is a bit absurd.

Now I've got a cat who after every meal goes totally bezerk. He dashes around the room at top speed, leaps on top of the chairs from where he jumps onto the shelf then leaps off again and dashes across the floor and the runs up the stairs then halfway up he'll leap off the stairs and land on top of a chair etc. He's probably just letting off steam after his meal and has yet to knock anything over but one yell from me and he calms down, for 5 minutes. I found him a couple of times in my room sitting on my bed but he has not touched a single model, yet.

Luckily I keep all my models up high on a shelf so the cats cannot reach them. My cats are nuts, their mother was ferrel and was having several litters. They are brothers, but I'm pretty sure the first one's father was a squirrel and the second one's father was a tiger . Needless to say they are both freaks and they run around like nutbars all day. They chew stuff, scratch stuff and knock stuff over (although they've never knocked over any models) but they are fun and entertaning and I love having them around.

@ cyhupilot ....big

I have 4 (!!!) yes very much alive cats....and I deal with the risk of them jumping somewhere they don`t belong.
On the other hand.......I have a 6 year old son, he just loves airplanes, and he....will sometimes pick a model up, and play with it.
And yes....he is so very careful with the models, I don`t worry a bit about it really
I even bougt him a hogan 737 2 years ago...and it is still in one piece, and he plays with that a lot! (including the landig gear)

my cat does EXACTLY the same thing, after her dinner she goes absolutly crazy (somtimes chaseing her tail around a chair leg at about 100rpm), but lukly doent come near my room, the only time she has touched one of my models is when i walked into my room 2 years ago when she was a kitten and she was hitting a small crappy model i didn't really care for (1:144 f-14 poorly painted) with her paw around the bottom shelf, it wasn't broken and at the time i thought it was cute until it occured to me she may not stop at the f-14 and she may ruin my collection, but lukely she did stop at the f-14 and hasn't been a problem since.

yes resin may be a bit weaker than plastic but it will not break in normal cercumstances, it just sounds like a silly accident that will not happen again. As for the 2 models broken in shipment, i have seen pictures of die-cast metal models that have been completely destroyed during shipping, its just bad luck and human error on the part of the postal service who don't take care.

Maybe you should be more careful like everyone else is saying. I have plastic and metal models...and trust me that the metal models are probably more susceptible to breaking than the plastic ones are. Even my 6 year old son and 4 year old daughter know how to handle my models carefully. Don't blame the maker for your inability to display your models in a safe place

Similar incident in my house, but mine always survive
My hogan 747-8 and nearby premier planes 787 fell 11 ft from my top shelf, when the most extraordinary thing happened,it was...............ABSOLUTELY NOTHING,they are perfectly fine,on crutches I tend to knock all my models over from time to time yet they have never broken, just one tip, don't sit on a premier planes stand,I heard a loud crunch, and we all know what happened next, to put it in simple terms I stuck my hand
to it with superglue anyway you shouldn't blame manufacturers for your mistakes
Cats and models aren't exactly best friends but a cost effective solution would be acrylic display boxes

Thumbs down Re: Risen large airplane models SUCK

MOST people have missed the point; i don't have experience w/ resin &
models in general @ this point in time. Everyone who commented w/ crappy remarks are commenting from an experienced point of view, well DUH!! It's obvious when you have experience or know what the material is. I didn't even know resin was a word much less what it was. Every time i asked people responded it was a plastic composite. NO WHERE, nor has ANYONE ever told me what resins weaknesses were or how to be more careful with them as the model gets bigger. IF it was wood, that's obvious, but normal people don't have dealings with resin enough to know how it's like as a model.

i misstated the "display" area. it was sitting in storage on top of multiple boxes where it didn't seem possible for the cat to get to. On top of that there was nothing there obvious to attract the cat, none of the plane could be seen from the fl. I assume he was just exploring and seeing where he can get to; she was also climbing up the bricks on the fireplace.

98% of you guys as usual are just being JERKS, i wonder why most people are trailing off the forum & new ones from joining in larger numbers.

Geeks taking comfort amongst your selves in your own little world...

Do you *really* need experience with the material to know that it won't survive impact with the ground, travelling at ~ 35kph/9.8m/s?

.........LoL .....LoL ......LoL ......sorry fleetlordatvar (no dis-respect whatso ever from me at all) I'm still learning stuff too, even those seemingly silly questions that others know all about (respect to them).......now, I tried buying this An225 months ago from the USA (JPF) and he wouldnt allow it (I'm in Australia). He said he shipped a few of these (and the An124s) around the world and most of the 225s came back broken (rear tail/stabiliser)......even after cotton-wool packaging....After many re-assurances that I gave (if it breaks in transit- I will fix it at my own expense blah blah blah....) he sent it! It arrived broken and I glued it and all is good. You can barely see the faint hair-line fracture on it so in my mind "iz-nice"..... I can't tell you about resins (coz I don't know) but see if you can fix it and tryn keep 'em (the cat and yer models) separated.....

Why didn't you simply ask if any of us could explain to you, the differences between the common materials used for these types of model?

There would have been no disgrace in you doing so. None of us ever know everything. On more than one occasion, I have been grateful to fellow members on here, for kindly giving me help and information in connection with our hobby, and I've been collecting these things for 35yrs.

Wether or not you were including me in your 98% of 'jerks' I neither know nor care, but your attitude and sweeping generalisations, do nothing for your credibility. If you don't know, just ask, for goodness sake.

Me, I just enjoy good cat jokes. Like resin models, I am allergic to cats. So I am not only a dog person, I am a Poodle person as they are better for the allergies. My poodles can't climb onto my shelves, nor do they seem very interested in models. They are crazy about stuffed toys though. We all felt the pain of having a model damaged beyond repair though. It's like losing a child!!!
