Awesome indeed! Thanks! I can't seem to take my eyes off the sleek F-111 in the background of the 1st pic. BTW, is that Nellis AFB in the 3rd pic where the F-22 took off?

That second pic reminds me of one of the coolest avation experiences of my life. I was tooling around in a 172 at 55 mph at night in san antonio. When ATC tells me to be aware of trafic taking off from lackland. So right in front of me while at 4,000' a three ship of F-16's take off with afterburner and vanish in the night. reall cool and so impresive considering how fast i was puttering around.

F-111s are the cats ***...but I have a bad taste in my mouth from Tornados.
I used to help the Brits with their broken thrust reversers while in Saudi Arabia in the mid 90s...but I got a hell of a lot of free beer for doing that....so I guess the Tornado is alright

Its a real shame that the US tried to create a do everything fighter/bomber with the F-111. If they would have focused a little more on one or two roles she could have been really special. Interceptor/Bomber/Jammer/Nuke/Carrier, thats a lot of roles for one jet. Although the carrier thing never did come full circle.

The F-111 was a remarkable aircraft...but very hard to maintain.
I was given the opportunity to help change out the left wing on an EF-111A for its last operational mission into Iraq from Saudi Arabia in the 1990s. Me being used to the simplicity of the C-130 the F-111 blew my mind. A truly remarkable airplane. Shame the mission has since gone to the EA-6B.

Way to go, Sagar! Thank you heaps! I was staring at the pics for a good 10 minutes...just love the long slender nose, swing wing design, side-by-side pilot seating, the quadrant intake and the large tail! It's a shame they are no longer in service!

But since I've been spoilt with pics of a swing-wing aircraft, how about the BONE or Tomcat? Thanks in advance!

Well, you know we have a C-17 pilot in the making amongst our group. Can't get a better chance then through him.

! Classic! I gotta say, I've done it twice, and it's one sweet ride. Hell, they even have a bed in the back of the flight deck! Not to mention an internet connection.

1. This one has a bit too much noise in it....I'd bump up the contrast a bit. There may be some exhaust coming through the frame from one of the other jets. It's bascially heat haze.

2. Same with this one.

3. This one is just off from bring sharp. Just compare the nose landing gear to the next one.

4.

5.Just a hair lighter and you'll be set. It got way too dark where the engine nozzles are.

6. Just like you said, too light

7. Just make it darker and add some contrast?
This is all assuming you are trying for perfection. I love each and every shot that you took as is. You were there, you captured it, and are cool enough to share them with us. It's hard trying to get the shots to be exactly as it was when you looked through the view finder. And you'll see the quality of my shots vary greatly. It's all about how much time I want to spend editing them. If you look at some of the galleries on my website, you'll come across a lot of them that I just leave completely untouched. Mainly cuz I'm lazy, and have a hard time picking out 10-20 of my absolute best shots from 200. I just can't. So instead of 20 stunning pictures all edited, i put up 200 average shots. But I'm ok with that.

But you're doing a great job! I love the variety of shots and the subject matter. I wish I had a shot like you#4.

Much thanks for the help...
I agree with everything yousaid... except for one thing, the noise (like you said ) is heat from the other planes. It almost creates its own Boken... are you saying it would be better without the heat or do you also see noise within the heat?

Thanks again for the help and keep the criticism coming... if I have had no one pointing things out for the past few months...all my shots would still look like snapshots from a P&S

Well, it's constructive criticism! I'm always hesitant about giving it, cuz I don't want it to seem like there is anything 'wrong' with your pics. It's just a matter of perspective. But a lot of people have helped me along the way, and I'm just trying to keep it going. I hope you don't mind, as this would be a major no-no on most photogrpahy boards without your permission, but I took your last shot and edited it.

2. Adjusted the brightness (to make it overall a bit darker) and took out a bit of the contrast.
3. Went into the colors and added a bit of red, green, and yellow.
4. Then I gave it one pass of the Smart Sharpened Filter (145%, .0.2 radius, remove Gaussian Blur with More accurate checked)

Then a save for web, at the maximum jpg setting. The larger the file size, the less loss of detail.

Hope you didn't mind. And just one bit of personal pref, if you crop it so it looks like the nose it tilting up and to the left, it'll give it the impression that it's taking off. We know it is, but it mind wants to see more of an angle.

ps. Your are 100% correct about the 'noise' that i mentioned. I meant to emphasize that it is heat haze and that it comes off as noise. The heat also makes it look soft, but that's just what heat haze does...no really going around that. It just depends on the type of shot that you were trying to get. If you want sharp and clear, then it detracts from that, or if you want artsy and give the sense of this plane is roaring to life, then it works? It's all perspective.

Great shots guys...man those pics of the f-14's made me miss the good old days. Nothing like a good old cold war to spin up the military avaition juices. Now were getting rid of 10 eagles, 4 bones, 3 buffs, and the state of rhode island for one f-22..........sigh

Yes, props on the F-14 pictures!

I miss them! As a kid I would ride my bike up to the approach end of Miramar on good ol' Kearny Villa road. (back in those days, VF-1 and VF-2 would fly in some nice colors.)

Like Sagar, I will have to pick shot #4 as the best - a well-balanced clear, crisp shot! Sorry, I am not a pro when it comes to photography and therefore, I can't provide any constructive critism of any sort but rather provide moral support! Thanks for the pics and great job!

I swear it was flying no higher than 500ft at about 500 knots! It happened at Mexican Hat - sorry guys, I'm not as privileged as most of you are...all I have are pics of nature.

Thank you very much, S! Seeing those cats just made my day! Although it has been retired, the F-14 still remains my favourite fighter jet! My favourite shot will have to go to the third one - the fly-by. BTW, was it a high-speed, low-level fly-by?
