Thanks guys! Yeah, the Nimitz was coming into the bay for SF Fleetweek. On the waist catapults, there were 2 Super Hornets being readied to launch as soon as we entered the bay!

Showoff! Is that an aggressor F-16 off to the right? Anyways, how did you come across such a cool job? What type of schooling did you have to do? I wouldn't retire antime soon either. One of the best feelings in the world is when a high powered jet slices through the air right above you sending shock waves rattlling through your bones. I had an F-14 fly about 15 feet over my head once and it was one of the scariest most awesome feelings of power I have ever felt. I love airshows and just being around planes in general. I think it's great that you can combine your love of jets and photography into a career. It looks like a busy schedule but I'm sure it is one hell of a ride. Thanks again for sharing the pictures. I always look forward to seeing them.
Man, I bet that was awesome! I've been on vultures row when a Super Bug took off the waist cats and that was one of the coolest things. The entire island was shaking. Yeah, that's the Top Gun F-16 I posted a few pages back.
I've been luck enough to find a unique niche and be able to do something that I love. I'm by no means financially successful, infact, I regularly lose money. By the time you factor in airline tix, rental car, hotels, time to edit, food, beer (it's a proven fact people shoot better if they drink ) then it really isn't worth it when you sell a few pics to a magazine or newspaper. But then again, I don't do it for the money, I do it for the experiences that I get along the way. I am a part time software guy. So my background is in that. I picked up photography in college and just started banging on doors and seeing where that got me. I do a lot of volunteer work and that opens doors too.
And if anyone is interested in photography, or have any questions, just fire them off. I'm more then happy to answer them if I can and if not, I'll try and help us both learn the answer. I'm still learning different techniques.

Man those pics are great. I just bought a 1/72 scale kit of Fat Albert on e-bay this week. Other than putting a video on you tube does anyone know of another way I could show you guys one?
you are one freakin lucky dude bleuangel...what lenses are you shooting with? i see a red ring around that f-18 shot. 16-35L? 17-40L? hehe
Good eye! Those last three shots were taken with my 100-400mm L IS f/4-5.6. It's a decent lens. Not as sharp as I want.....I want something that will cut diamonds! My wide angle lens is my 17-40mm f/4. I also have a 50 f/1.8, but I don't use it too often.

I just bought a 100-400L today...I can't wait to get her
I love that you have the prop blur on "fat chick" Too many people have such a high shutter speed on props and it just looks odd.
Can I ask what shutter speed, fStop, and ISO you used in that picture?
Thanks
Yeah, that's a pet peve of mine too! Here's the exif on that shot:
1/160, f/14, iso 100, shot in shutter priority at 340mm with my 100-400 L in Pattern metering mode.
It's a good lens. Very capable of most shooting, but a bit soft at 400mm. I've heard that the lenses sweet spot in at f/8.
So now that you have it, we had better see some shots!!!

I should get it by Friday
So if it is soft at 400mm do you try to limit yourself to about 340mmish or that is just how that shot happened to be?
Well, I try and hover around 380mm. Not quite at full, but just a hair back. But when you get it, try this. mount the lens on a tripod, use the self timer feature, and take two sets of shots. One at 400mm and one at 380mm. Then download the card and view each pic at 100% zoomed in. That will show you the effect of the softness. My lens is about 4 years old, so it may just be earlier versions?

Thanks for the video...love that adrenaline rush during JATO, albeit only for about 15 seconds.
Did you shoot that video? Was that one of the times you tagged along for a joyride?

Yep, the first day of the airshow in 2005 the Blues were going around and asking mechanics if they wanted a ride. That was my day off so I wasn't in uniform. I came back the next day bright and early in uniform and made sure Iwas in perfect posistion to be asked. They cam around and asked me and I said hell yeah. It was one of the coolest things i have ever done in my life.
Sorry I've been MIA for a while. It's been a busy few weeks, and it's only going to get busier. I'm hitting the road for the next month straight. Nellis is having it's airshow and the culimination of the Air Forces 60th Anniversary celebration. They are going to have some rare and unique stuff flying. Should be amazing. Then toss in a refueling flight with 6 F-15E's and a trip out to an aircraft carrier, and I'd done for the month.
But in the mean time, I'd like you all to check out my blog for some more pictures of the past month. Too many to post here, but check it out if you've got the time and feel free to leave me a comment!
Sagar, what is the EXIF info for this AH-1? Specifically shutter speed, I am trying to help a guy out with blade blur and this is a good example of it,
No problem at all Todd! Happy to help another photographer out anytime I can.
F/14, 1/125sec, ISO 100. Shot in Tv Mode, Pattern Metering. @210mm with my 100-400L IS on a Canon 40D.
Unfortunately the Cobra, Super Stallion, Huey and Sea Knight have notoriously slow rotar speed. Meaning that their rotors don't spin that fast....thus making you go really slow shutter speed before you can get some decent prop blur.
Thats where IS helps a little as does the proper shooting stance and panning skills. My big secret with helos while shooting at large focal lengths is to just take a lot of shots. Eventually one will turn out in focus. Your biggest enemy is motion blur.
Let me know if you have any other questions, or need some more examples.

Well, I headed out to the Indian River today in hopes of seeing the Thunderbirds and other planes doing the show over the Kennedy Space Center, but I was too far away to even see anything.
But I did end up going to the Valiant Air Command Museum at the Titusville Airport...so here's some shots of some of their planes.

F-15 ACTIVE....I saw it once but it didn't fly while I was there. Is it noticeably more manuverable than a regular F-15? Was the Growler pic taken at Nellis? My coworkers said there were two of them at Red Flag.
Both of your shots on A.net are top notch. I prefer the F-15D with all the heat in the background but that F-18 ( I refuse to call that thing a rhino ... I reserve that name for the beloved F-4 ) is darn nice as well...
so, ever need a helper to carry your equipment when you get to go out on the carriers or bases?
Agreed! Camera is nothing, as they say, it's all location, location, location!
Those are great shots, well composed! Love to see some more if you got them. I take it you were in a -135 also? You don't see too many of these type of shots from this angle. Thanks for posting them!
