If engine technology was that easy to reverse engineer the East would have had more efficient civilian turbofans long ago. It's not just about copying the physical dimensions, the manufacture of the components are not easy

That they will do. However the Chinese aren't very good in metallurgy (not on the same level as Russia and the US) and replicating the exotic alloys you see in Russian and US engineered high performance military jet engines will be difficult.

Why figure it out yourself when you can make a piss poor copy of someone else's work. As an added benefit, if the engine falls apart midair, and the pilot gets killed, there's a pretty big replacement pool to choose from.
