Cool Favorite Jet Bomber

Okay, this thread has seem to died...so I am trying to get it moving again.

Question, what is your all time favorite jet bomber? Mine is the B-47. It looked like a split between a bomber and a fighter.

(Pics for those of you who forgot what it looked like below.)

Hard for me to decide between a B-52 and a 47, so I guess I'll go with the B-52.

Easy for me... B-58, I saw one fly at the Edwards AFB open house in 1967....It was retired way before its time.

The F-111 is more of a fighter attacker.

Heres a little interesting fact: The first use of the ground following radar around Hawaii ended up were a few F-111 crashed. They had no clue why until they found out that the planes radar could not read volcanic ground causing the plane to just fly straight into sides of mountians and volcanios.

I would have to go with the B-1, whenever they perform at airshows the plane is simply awesome!

When has the F-111 been clased as a fighter? Ok, it was given an F code as the USAF/USN wanted it to be a fighter but it never was - it is one of the best low level bombers in the west.

Get real!

Default small list (bombers as well as voters)

I would have had other bombers on the list too, maybe B-58 Hustler, or would-be B-49, B-70 Valkyrie, and maybe russian too...

I personally would have loved to have seen the B-70 put into production. Hey wouldn't the later versions of the B-36 be in here too?

B-58 is on the list Blackbird. XB-70 never went beyond testing. And that is a good point about russkie bombers, Maybe a Tu-4 or Blackjack.

As for the B-36, yes it had 4 jets on it but had 6 turbo props. So in the poll I thought is more of a prop than a jet.

The B-36 did not have turbo prop engines. It had 6 Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major piston engines.

sorry about B-58 Hustler - I was thinking about B-57 Canberra.
But then there were at least two other operational ones like B-45 Tornado, B-66 Destroyer, beside experimental B-43, B-46, B-48, B-49, B-51, B-53 (ex A-44), B-60, B-70, (maybe even B-71...) etc.
Russians had among others Il-28, Tu-16, Backfire, Su-24, and some grotesque early jet (not likely vote gatherers...). BTW, Tu-4 is an ex B-29 (radials, no jets).
England had their V-bombers too...
Personally, I love the experimentals, but some early beasts would also fit in...

Ment Tu-16,, not four. Those are/were all good bombers too.

The 47 is always a good jet, Jimmy Stewart did a good job showing the 47 and the 36 off in "Strategic Air Command"

First choice:I`d go for the Avro Vulcan.
Seeing that big delta doing wing overs, and hearing that sound at many RAF Mildenhall air fetes was simply breathtaking!

2nd: EE/BAC Canberra/B-57,just for its long legs in service,in its many roles,Bomber,Trainer, trials, photo recon etc..(for those in the UK i have heard that NASA`S WB-57 will be at Mildenhall 11th-21st october).

3nd: TSR-2,i know never operational, but my opinion is that had it entered service it would still be with the RAF today like the canberra

[QUOTE=emzd953]First choice:I`d go for the Avro Vulcan.

The beautiful Vulcan is why "Thunderball" is my favorite Bond flick...glad it was only a model that they ditched! While I was based at Offutt AFB
the RAF detachment would put on an absolutely jaw-dropping display of the
Vulcan's aerobatic capabilities (albeit with a minimal fuel load). Always inter-
esting chatting with the No. 617 Squadron guys...er...chaps at the static
display. Aside from the "Dambusters" Vulcan, there was a second Vulcan
posted to Offutt from another Vulcan squadron called "The Saints" after
the classic Simon Templar series, with the "Saint" logo on the fin. Broke my
heart when I learned that the storied 617 had turned their Vulcans in for the
Tornado...

As you can guess from my username, I've passed through and flown many
missions out of Mildenhall. Once while TDY there I had to return to the USA
for a family emergency and the USAF pulled out all the stops, hiring a cab to
take me down to Heathrow for a TWA 707 flight to JFK. The cab driver be-
gan to talk about the history of the airfields in East Anglia and the USAAF
ops, and then turned to the topic of No. 617 Squadron. He was astounded
that this Yank knew about Guy Gibson and the Dambusters.

Best to all in the UK

Default Vulcan.

The "thunderball" model vulcan is now owned by The Vulcan Operating Company, now repainted as XH558 to help raise funds for the Vulcan To The Sky project.(see www.tvoc.co.uk/ for more details)

The remains of the mock up vulcan, used for swimming around the vulcan scenes are still in on the sea bed in the caribian(i think),being made only of scaffold and fabric(fabric long gone).

RC were you Air crew?
If seen i`ve prob seen you in flight, spent WAY to many hours during the 80`s and 90`s around Mildenhall and Lakenheath "trying" to take good photo`s of RC`s,SR`s etc..

Indeed I was aircrew - only on the RC's we called ourselves "backenders", the
guys who did the actual intel collection mission. BTW, one of our officers
went on an exchange intel collection mission with No. 51 Squadron - couldn't
praise them highly enough on his return. He remarked that they were arguably the best in the business, due mainly to the fact that they had worked together for so long and really knew their stuff.

I'd have to go with the B-52, Big, ugly and could've destroyed Russia with one load of nukes, The roar of the 8 engines cast the ruskies into panic mode

Default European press

Al-Qeda operatives like to be bombed by Europeans planes better according to Le Monde. The survival chances are higher was the general response of all those bearded individuals.

Yuri, wash that funky pesticide off your naranas before you eat them. The AR-234 is a vintage 1940s design that first saw combat in the Ardennes offensive. It has been out of service for so long, you weren´t even a dirty thought in your parents respective brain stems back then. It still looks great, though.

On a side note, the L.A. Times wrote that Al Qaida terrorists also love Chilean cocaine better than the Columbian stuff. They can play "toss the midget" with the delivery guy after they sniffed the stuff.
