Super jumbo jet clips another plane at JFK airport

Super jumbo jet clips another plane at JFK airport - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK – Two jets involved in a fender bender at New York City's John F. Kennedy Airport will be inspected to determine the extent of their damage.

Air France Flight 7, bound for Paris, was taxiing on a runway when its left wingtip clipped the tail of Comair Flight 6293 just after 8 p.m. on Monday. The Comair commuter plane had just landed from Boston.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters says there were no injuries.

He says both jets were towed to an area where they will be inspected.

Air France said 495 people and 25 crew members were on the Airbus A380. It says it is cooperating with the investigation.

The Comair CRJ 700 regional jet was carrying 62 passengers and four crew members. Comair operates regional flights for Delta.

This happened again. Bad day for the A380.

look again at clip. looks like an a340 not a380. nose seems flat for a 380.

Jeez, the way that CRJ got whipped around reminded me of the "Gemini Jetz" kid playing with his models. LOL

Umm, no. Definitely an A380. The video is just a little distorted.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. When they were showing the clip on The Today Show this morning, I could've sworn it was an A343. Has AF even put their A380 into service?

er, Definitley a Airbus 380.!!! Also AF said all 495 people where not hurt. I don't think an 340 can hold that many people unless they are sitting in each others laps.

Yes Randy, AF is definitely flying the A380 on the JFK route. In fact, it had some days extended. See below

AIRFRANCE extends A380 New York JFK service increase till late-Apr 2011 | AIRLINE ROUTE

AIRFRANCE extends A380 New York JFK service increase till late-Apr 2011

Due to current situation in Japan, AIRFRANCE is extending revised A380 operation to New York JFK. From 24MAR11 to 24APR11, AF operates 12 weekly A380 service on this route.
Planned operation as follows:

AF006/007 Daily
AF010/011 Day x23 (Day 23 with 772)

Re: Super jumbo jet clips another plane at JFK airport

Well, I suppose you're right, but it surely didn't look like an A380 in the video from what I can see. And yes, the A343 can only hold 440 max.

Even if the video is stretched, you can still make out the double decks, engines, wing and tail of the aircraft. It's an A380.

Yup, I saw the video again tonight on the news. The video shown on the news tonight was not "stretched" and you could definitely tell it's an A380. Is this the second incident involving the A380 clipping another aircraft on the ground?

until the investigation is completed, everything is speculation and theory.

btw...the video ISNOT at real time speed. it is distorted and sped up slightly.

donot know if i would want to hear this investigation summary first or the recovery results of the tail section and the black box status from AF 447

Here's a YAHOO video showing a re-enactment of the incident ... a truck crossing in front of the CRJ might have caused it to stop short of its intended stopping point, thus putting it into the path of the WhaleJet™.

Re: Super jumbo jet clips another plane at JFK airport

Dumbojet? Dumbo Jumbo? :rolleyes::rolleyes:

The entrance to the gates is where the incident happened. If you look at the image below, the CRJ, while it waited for a gate to open up/gate marshals to guide it in, could very well have been stopped at a point that although may have cleared any other aircraft taxiing behind it (even perhaps a 747), but could not avoid the wingspan of the A380. People that work there know that Delta Connection always blocks the service road that you can see in the picture posted below when they pull in. This builds up alot of traffic because they are all waiting for the marshallers to guide the plane in. Those that cannot afford to wait (there are many including vehicles transporting quick connection bags) take their chances by illegaly crossing in front of the aircraft. Some even go out into the taxiway in order to avoid jetblast while passing the aircraft from behind. When these aircraft usually pull in and stop, their engines are in the roadway and the tail is still on the taxiway. Now when the A380 is taxiing away from Terminal One (towards the right of the picture below) the left winglet is just about on top of the roadway boundary line running parralel to the taxiiway heading towards the left of the picture for departure. The CRJ should not have stopped there. The Marshallers should have guided the plane in already because the plane is not even allowed to pull in in the first place if there is no gate available. If the ground controller was watching the two aircraft it would still be very hard to tell whether or not if the CRJ left enough clearance for the A380 to pass. Its possible the blame will eventually go to Delta's ground crew for them not being there on time to receive the flight.

Seeing this overhead shot starts to put some clarity to the matter. My guess is there will be enough shared blame to go around, based on your hypothesis. ;)

It would help if you can all see the logo/mascot for the A380 DumboJumboJet. Notice the large wing span.

My guess is a congested airport, SOP (standard operating procedure), and an oversized plane the ground crews are not use to working with all caused this accident.

I've flown a Delta Connection out of JFK before, and all of these small CRJ's are parked between three very busy international terminals and next to a very busy taxiway. Delta has also been adding more Delta Connection flights to JFK in recent days adding to further congestion.

I'm sure in the past, they have gotten away with a CRJ holding short with it's rear end hanging out, because as Moin said, most planes taxing by have cleared the tail. And for the ground controllers, at night, from their perspective in the tower, they could not see the clearance required for the DumboJumboJet to clear the tail of the MouseJet.

I don't understand why the Port Authority has allowed Delta Connection to expand it's gates so close to a busy active taxiway. Ultimately, I would hold the Port Authority responsible for allowing this congestion "pinch point" to happen in the first place. This Delta Connection terminal should be in a less congested portion of the airport that passengers are bussed to.
