Nice, I'm flying SMF to LAX tomorrow on SW. I hope this is not my aircraft.

Was this a 300 or 700?

didn't this happen like a year ago on another SWA 737 (a 300 if I recall), in around the same area on the fuselage?

Did this not happen to a US Airways 737 just a few days ago?

EDIT never mind that was possibly a bullet hole according to the FBI.

The 737-700 info was just off this article, I guess the press makes mistakes:

They did make a mistake, it is a 737-300. The news always makes mistakes when it comes to aircraft identification in articles.

This particular plane was one of the "newer" 737-300's in their fleet, therefore SWA has grounded 81 733s.

If it were an Airbus, some idiot child Boeing fan would have said something about 'scarebus' within the first three replies. Hence, Mystere's sarcasm. The fanboys around here have certainly earned their reputation for saying such stupid things.

To be totally honest, this is becoming ALL TOO COMMON on 737s! This has happened several times and it's obviously a design/fatigue issue in the area of the roof panel aluminum.

These kinds of "issues" should NEVER happen to any airliner - and the fact that it has happened SEVERAL times to Boeing 737s is not a good sign.

Boeing engineers need to figure out the problem - most likely there will need to be doublers installed in key areas to prevent this from happening more frequently, and causing a disaster.

Maybe airlines should reevaluate their maintenance methods.

Luckily WestJet hasn't been pulling these problems with their NG's so I'm not totally ****ting my pants for when I fly to Florida end of month.

It's happened about three times over the past couple of years if I recall correctly ... could it be a Southwest thing?

Good thing we're flying to Seattle on Alaska 737s later this month ...

Seriously though, those passengers had NOTHING to worry about. 737s have been known to fly as "convertibles" ...

Jokes aside, I think this is more of a SWA issue. They have a terrible past history of aircraft maintenance if I recall.

I'm a Boeing lover, but Airbus's don't scare me. And Southwest is very successful, most airlines have their maintenance issues. If I recall, United and American has grounded some of their aircraft within the not-so-distant past because of maintenance reasons.

I'm 30 minutes from boarding an SW 737 SMF to LAX. I'm lucky, the LAX flight after mine was cancelled. At SMF SW has 6 can called flights on the board. I have no issues with flying SW and the 737.

I loaded some of the photos of the SW 737 with the hole in the top on my iPad to flip through on my flight. This should contort the passengers around me.

Good luck, the worst that could happen is that everyone could get a window seat.

So you guys didn't rip one during the flight? How 'bout the passengers around where you sat? Did you have to turn on the fresh air vents full blast into your face?

Yeah.. United's was in February I think. Paperwork issue with work done on 757s, if I recall correctly.

But yes, the FAA has dinged a lot of airlines with fines recently. Unless and until somebody can produce all the facts and stats, I think anybody who's saying WN is particularly worse than anybody else is having a case of confirmation bias.

Let's wait for the NTSB... it's their job to diagnose these things.

Given that they grounded the 733 fleet, there will be some number of those.

Neither I am ! I'm glad to fly on any airliner, either A or B, or even Ty or Il (still have to try these ones though ).

Gotta love that xenophobic, racial stereotyping. I think Mystere's little sarcastic jibe went straight over your head, unlike any of Southwest's 733 fleet currently...

The PREVIOUS Southwest decompression incident occurred in July of 2009 - also on a Boeing 737-300!

Here's a link to the detailed article showing photos of the aluminum skin (.032" thick):

So for all the people who were wanting to make premature judgments - it does not sound like Southwest's maintenance program was at fault here. There simply were not any inspections on the required schedule that would have caught the developing failure.

At least, that's how it looks so far.

Patience, people.

Then isn't that technically an issue with SWA's maintenance program?

Actually, it can be both. I'm French-Canadian, and my ancestry is 100% French, going back over 300 years. Although not a race, it can be an ethnicity, of which I am very proud. Merci!

THANKS! After reading that I DO understand it.

It's interesting that this issue has even confused Boeing. There are several hundreds of 737-300's in service around the globe so hopefully this is not a common structural flaw. So far SouthWest have caught a bit of metal fatigue on some of their other 733s, would be interesting to see if more airlines start reporting such conditions.
