I get the whole crane thing, but clearly they were trying to outdo Finnair with the blandest livery of all time. It's like these airlines don't even try anymore.

I like the half red tail, and this new colour is to much white.. Looks like they did a special retro scheme..

Perhaps there is a contest to see which airline can create the most BORING scheme! !

I'm sure this has a LOT to do with the beancounters being in control ... by having an ALL-white fuselage, it probably makes it more attractive to future buyers of their airframes, which in turn yields the airline income.

No different than re-selling your well-maintained used car with the fresh Earl Scheib paintjob ...

I'm not even sure I'd want a model of this. The model manufacturers will be jumping for joy though. Such an easy livery to replicate.

the livery was a decision made by JAL's board to "bring luck" supposedly to the airline despite its recent bankruptcy. JAL should really think about sticking to their current livery and spend their money more wisely. The board and the shareholders are basically screwing up this nice airline and NH is definitely going to beat them @ NRT....

Nice livery, very Japanese. The crane is great. So what if the rest of the airplane is white? It would be like if BA brought back the Landor and just painted the tail in it and left the plane white. It is better to have some classicness back than nothing.

In this case, I'd much rather they just painted the whole plane white and not even bother with any designs. It's just plain awful.

JAL definitely contacted the same group that did the "new and improved" Finnair livery.

Ugh !!!

My question is are they saving money by painting the plane all white? Or in general do airlines save money by painting their planes white.

Of course it's cheaper! NMR = No Masking Required ... just the basics which would be windows and landing gear ... the rest is just ... WHITE!!!

Saves a LOT of time ... imagine how long it took to mask Boeing's new "sunrise orange" 747-8I ... that's a lot of work (time)!

I was mostly wondering about fuel costs...but regardless if that's the case...

Then this allows JAL to save money. So, I don't mind this livery if it helps (somewhat) keep an airline in business.

Actually I wouldn't even call it a "livery" ... I'll bet you that maybe all the graphics are "stick on" vinyl graphics and all they would need to do is to PEEL them off when needed!

It's all about the bottom line, guys. Elaborate = $$$. Not sure JAL is in the financial position to redesign the livery and repaint the fleet. They went with heritage which isn't at all a bad thing for a legacy carrier.

I kinda like it. Nice to have the crane back.

How about their new B787's, and the one with the special scheme which they had a contest for it.. Will it still be painted in the winning colours, or just put the old dull crane on it.???

The Tsuru was brought back as it is a symbol of good luck and would supposedly increase employee morale given JAL's ailing finances in recent years.

I like the Tsuru, but overall the Arc of the Sun livery still blows this one out of the water.

the belly would be bare metal. c'mon, no paint = savings! heck. make the Japan Airlines titles bare metal too!

It will probably be a fruitless endeavor, but you can try. I know if I was calling the shots over at JAL I'd definitely opt for your scheme.

One can't help but wonder what's going to happen to an airline already in a perilous financial state now that the entire country is about to enter a perilous financial state ?
