Default United Airlines repainting questions!

Hi All,

Yesterday at SFO I saw several aircraft in the new United livery (including an A320 and 777). Prior to this, I only saw 737s and 757s in the new United. I had thought they were merely Continental planes with a UNITED sticker slapped on. Now I'm not so sure that's true.

I looked it up and there are a few A319s, A320s and 1 744 painted in the new United colors. My questions are:

1. How is United determining when the aircraft will be painted. I thought it would have made sense to slap UNITED stickers on all the Continental planes, then repaint the United planes, then repaint the Continental planes. Obviously, that is not what is happening.

2. United sure has been slow in painting their planes from Battleship to Blue Rising. Does this mean we are now going to have United planes flying around in three different liveries for years to come?

3. Does anyone have a picture of the 744 in UNITED/CO colors?

I'm not too sure what the specific circumstances are with this UA/CO situation, but typically an aircraft will receive the new livery when it gets resprayed after a heavy maintenance check. But since this is a merger, I don't know if they're thinking along the same lines as Delta when Delta made a concerted effort to get the Northwest aircraft repainted into Delta colors very quickly. I would like to think that United will probably focus on the remaining aircraft in battleship colors. Either way though, I would expect to see three liveries for the next few years.

I wish United (err ... Continental) would have resurrected their old "meatball" icon and brought it together with a new typeface as such ... would have looked very elegant IMHO!

Yes, much better than the old CO globe-logo we'll see on the aircraft for the next few years...

You might as well change the airline name to 'Continental' while you are at it. For all practical purposes, this is still a Continental-airline. The only 'United' about this merger is the name on the planes and the fact that the airline is headquartered in Chicago. Outside of that, this is mostly a Continental-management team with the Continental logo still on the aircraft. Lets also not forget that it was United who was practically begging Continental for a merger.

The Continental "golden globe" is the perfect symbol for a global international airline. International is where airlines make most of their money, so this is smart marketing sticking with the globe.

The old meatball looks like a logo for a vacuum cleaner company. Maybe Dyson can adopt it.

I consider myself a UA fanboy, and I actually LIKE THIS IDEA. Paint the planes in something closer to the current UA livery with lots of blues and and it would look really sharp, a great livery for the worlds biggest airline.

This is somewhat OT, but United's advertisement in my local newspaper still bears the old United logo which is on the Blue scheme. A bit surprised that they are so quick to repaint their planes but not change the logo on their ad.

I still get all my regular Continental Airlines e-mail for the Presidents Club. The two airlines are not official merged until their new FAA operating certificate is approved. Both airlines are still operating under two separate certificates and reservation systems.
