Default Smoking 777?

Since when did the 777 start competing with the 707? From 1:40 onwards. Looks like those engines are tired and in need of maintenance.

It does look quite smokey after getting off the ground. I remember seeing an MD-80 takeoff at YYZ, I thought it was going to blow up!

Reminds me of the PWs on United's 777-200s too. It would always surprise me when I saw how much smoke would come spewing out of those engines as they spooled up to takeoff power on 8R in HNL. Pretty awesome sight, even from watching it at the end of Lagoon Dr.

Here's a good thread on a.net explaining why engines can appear to be 'smokier' under certain conditions; I'm guessing the touch-and-go by that JAL B772 was one of them.

btw, LOVE the sound of those engines spooling up!
