Default PIA launches New Livery

National flag back on PIA aircraft

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to bring back the national flag on its aircraft fleet by scrapping the existing traditional designs, the airline spokesman said on Friday. The existing designs were only temporary inaccordance with the DESTINATION PAKISTAN program the Govt introduced afew years ago. This program has now reached the end and a uniform livery will soon replace all of the existing fleet.

Managing Director Aijaz Haroon operated the first Boeing 777 aircraft with refurbished livery on the Karachi-Islamabad-Karachi route, Sultan Hasan, the PIA spokesman said.

PIA Boeing 777-240ER (AP-BGK) spotted at BHX wearing airline's new livery.

He said that 39 aircraft will be adorned with the national flag and Pakistan will be boldly written on the belly of the aircraft, making it readable at low heights during landings and take-offs.

He said that PIA carries major maintenance and refurbishing of its fleet after every five years. ìNew livery design, which has been approved by PIA Board of Directors, also include golden stripe with existing streak of beige and green colors, Hasan said.

As per the airlines maintenance program, all aircraft are repainted approximately after 5 years, and in due process the livery changed gradually over a period of one-and-a-half-year after which the entire fleet of PIA including Boeing 777s, Boeing 747s, Airbus A310-300s and ATR 42-500 aircraft will have fresh design.

PIA spokesman said that there would be no major financial impact of this exercise, compared with previous livery design, in which 22 different colours were used.

A youtube video was taken of the First Flight.

Everything is good until you get to the tail. The tail just ruins it for me.

Simple and dignified, it's fine, and the tail at least takes away the usual boring Eurowhite feel of it.

No, I like it!

Please don't tell me it's some sort of cruel April Fools joke.

The render Looked better. In it, the tail was a Beautiful Dark Forest Green and below the Stripe was a soft Peach colour. It looks Alright but I am dissapointed.

Ok, I just logged on and saw this first, I hadn't seen the render so wasn't aware of the controversy surrounding it all.

I still like it, but with a few modifications it would be better methinks.

Except for the uninspired PIA lettering, this corporate livery is definitely worth writing home about. Because this is the 1:400 forum and not 1:1 scale, I might as well say that I never have purchased PIA; probably never will.

I have to admit when the inital B747 was painted the livery did not suit the aircraft very well. However as soon as the first B777 was painted. I loved it. It has a beautiful livery and a tail that will be highly noticable at major of PIA's destinations.

I hope we see this from GJ or Phoenix in the future. A great looking bird with a combination of various ideas which PIA has listened too. I dont think DW will hae the right colours though I do love their B777 mould. However since GJ and PHX did get the colours right the first time and Im all for full metal models I hope to see them give it ago.

Ps. I have come to know PIA does not have any issues regarding making models.

It seems that tail doesn´t fit on the fuselage livery... it looks like they take the tail from another aircraft!!! I prefer the old one!!!

For any airline corporate identity is key, we have the example of Delta who went through 2 livery changes before returning back to the widget.

PIA's new livery choice was a short cut solution I can kind of see why they did it as the cost of a complete redesign would be huge throughout the company.

The problem here is and most people on this thread have rightfully spotted is that the design doesn flow from the fueslage to the tail - it is incomplete. They added the gold to add a bit on nostalga I guess from the Negus and Negus design but the tail doesn't seem right (IMO), they should have left it beige and had a green cresent on there. IMO the green and gold arc conflicts with the tail. Anyway since I am not PIA management it doesn't really matter what I think.

It's shame that an airline that was once so great (from what I have read) is still struggling to give itself an identity when really they should have hired the correct design firm when they ordered the B777, if I am not mistaken this is now the third lor forth livery change depending on whether you count the original one that was done on the 777.

Can you really see this design for 10 years?

It is true [email protected]. The provincial tails did alot of damage to the airline. What you have to understand is that PIA has always been run by the Government who love to get their hands into everything which PIA tries to do. Negus and Negus, a London based company, did design the 1980s and 1990s corporate identity for the airline and both received huge popularity. Sadly Negus and Negus decided to fold and PIA didnt contact anyone to brand the airline post the arrival of the B777.

However, thankfully the new MD is a senior pilot within the airline and alot of changes or un-doing is taking place to remove all the crap the airline was put under from the arrival of the first B777 to last year. Hopefully the new MD seems to be doing things that seem quite promising.

The arrival of the new livery posted above was passed by voting of the Board of Directors and many of them agreed to introduce it. The provincial tails were very expensive to maintain and the new livery can be produced without any third party. This has allowed the airline to save costs. Refurnishment is next in order on most of the fleet and more destinations are on the cards.

Back of the thread:
I hope GJ or Phoenix produced this model. Esp would love to park this next to BGJ and the B773ERs from PHX!!

I don't want to hijack your thread nor go into the politics of PIA or the country is belongs to. There are inconsistencies in what you stay and I will leave it at that.

I personally prefer their tail themes they had going on before this new final tail. I think the lines on the fuselage are too bent, and makes it look strange. I also feel the tail and fuselage just don't work with each other well. Just my opinion.

I agree that corporate identity is everything. It is identity that should impart strength and sense of permanency. American Airlines and Air France are two good examples. They have maintained this kind of identity for years. But, airlines like Delta and United who have bought into the fantastically large billboard logo that runs off the tail stuff are more likely to hurt their identity. They show weakness.

With regard to the PIA scheme, I see something more abstract in design. Both lines are attractively dainty yet show a sense of strength as they flow under the belly and swoop up beautifully to the tail to form the basis of the white mountain and valley that represent much of the geography of Pakistan. Everything combined shows strength and sense of permanency.

It doesn't help Delta's cause when they change their livery every few years either.

I would agree that it is quite attractive. The tail is not bad at all. I think it's quite smart, but I still like the multi color patterns better on my A310!
The ribbon is disturbingly resembling of EL AL's ribbon. I think EL AL should copyright its beautiful blue-silver ribbon.

And these changes were due to poor management that goes back to the beginning of deregulation. I have the book, Delta Airlines - Debunking The Myth by Sidney F. Davis (1988) but haven't read it yet as I'm studying early aviation.
