Its a great aircraft - did lots of flights pre covid to Hong Kong on CX and its one of my fav aircraft.

Seems like it will be an expensive mix flying both 789's and A350's simultaneously.

Initially the first batch of A350-1000s would be for the nonstop flights and then later orders consisting of the A350-900 would be for other routes.I could see substantial discounts for the A350 from Airbus and the cancelled options that they had for the A380 were transferable to other models.Other large carriers operate both the 787 and A350 side by side British Airways and Japan Airlines to name a few.In the future these two models will be the predominant long haul aircraft within the airline going forward.I could not see the 777-8 or -9 coming on board.The company also benefited with an agreement with pilots who initially were going to knock back the terms to fly ULH but were then spooked when covid hit and then agreed to company terms.

What do you think of the 77LR as an option? I remember reading that they were looking at Delta's now retired 77LR fleet, as I understand it, the 787 and 777's are allowed to be flown by the same pilots.

I was not aware that they were looking at these 777LRs.I do think that the 787 and 777 have a common pilot rating so a potential saving.Delta did use these on the Lax-Syd route.I had not flown on a 777 till a few years ago and found it enjoyable.I have read comments from flyers that it is noisy in the cabin.I have always thought that QF should have been an early customer for the 777.I did go on board the Boeing 777 test aircraft when it was in Australia.

Qantas cancelled 8 A380 orders, so it’s no surprise that the A350 was selected.

I know 100% boeing made them a very good offer for the 77L, can't remember exactly if it was a rumour that they were looking at ex Delta's.
It would seem like a very cheap and cost effective option given that they are only around 10 y/o, with the pandemic and lack of demand, I reckon they'd be able to get them for a really good price, give the cabin a refurbishment and use them until Airbus or Boeing produce a dedicated ULR aircraft with good capacity that you can load to the max and fly the full range.

There were a few reports that the 777-8 was in the lead to get the order for ulh however the delay with the 777X program the 777-8 would be the last to enter service and the 777-9 would receive priority.Boeing then offered the 777-9 with modifications as an interim gap for ulh until the -8 was available but they went with the A350-1000 in the end as we now know.Interesting to know the purchase price and running costs of the 777LR compared to the A380 and whether it was favourable.
