Default Spotting a classic at FRA - and a few others...

For many months I've seen a 747Classic overhead decending into FRA and now finally found the time to go there and snap a few pics...
Aviation is slowly getting back to life so I decided to go on June 09 and was lucky to catch some sun instead of the predicted thunderstorm...

Winds from the north meant runway 07 ops (and a few 18 departures) so I headed for the viewing platform at the 18, known to many as the "Affenfelsen".

She arrived on time and in a spot of sun

Now I thought that's it as her destination Tbilisi is a rather save 07 departure and 07 departures are just so far away to give a decent photograph.
But the god of weather and ATC were generous and so the actives were turned in favour for 25 exactly when 4L-GEN was ready to taxi out
Now Tbilisi is a rather save 18 departure

And here she comes taxiing down paralleling the 07R. Lots of heat-haze looking though a 400mm across a runway and several taxiways, but she's worth it.

A bit closer as she's rushing by - no panning shot as I didn't want to ruin this one...

Rotating rather early - I assume there isn't much payload...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this one is an absolute beauty. No colors on it but so beautifully weathered panel lines, awesome.
Don't want to link to the 4K image, but that's 2048 at least...

Some great shots there. It's been a real boon down at Heathrow these last 18 months for cargo movements and new planes/liveries. Heathrow doesn't see a lot of dedicated Cargo apart from the regular DHL A300s, but regular 767/747Fs have been coming and going every day of the week since the first lockdown. I love spotting, it's a proper clear your head hobby!

Great pics! It's awesome to see so many 747 classics being bought back from the dead!
Do Aerostan or Fly-pro ever visit FRA?
Seems Australia is the only country these airlines don't visit.
I'd like for a manufacturer to make these in 1/400 but probably too plain of a livery for most collectors.

Wonderful crisp, clean shots - these 1:1's look almost as good as our 1:400's. Keep shooting, Doug

Thanks.
I'm not aware of any 747Classics to operate into FRA other than 4L-GEN or the occational sistership GEO. Sadly. I'd love to once again see a Pratt powered 747Classic.

A few more pictures.
LH's widebody ops at FRA are mostly A330/340 with the occational 748 or A350.

I still haven't heard the sound of a Pratt 747 classic taking off, when Kalitta air used to do occasional charters into Sydney using their 742's, they would always arrive in the morning or afternoon, and depart at night (which was nearly always over Botany Bay).
I hope to one-day hear one departing overhead.

Funnily enough GeoSky brought 4L-GEO in yesterday to Heathrow. Was absolutely beautiful seeing a 747-200 come in, made an racket coming over the threshold to 27R. Loved it!

Awesome! So that ex BA came "home" finally.
I see GEO is getting around a bit, while GEN rarely does anything else than FRA.

Yeah, it was a bit like a homecoming! My friend was cabin crew on it when it first flew with BA. He said it was a horrible plane to fly on.

Can't remember when I saw the last Pratt 747Classic.
I saw plenty at FRA back in the late 80'/early 90s. I remember them being quite noisy and a look at noise tables supports this - louder than the RB211.
I was amazed about the GeoSky takeoff being a rather "normal" sound. But I'm sure they were far from MTOW and max thrust. At MTOW you wouldn't even see the nose gear getting off the ground from my photo spot.

What I'd be really (!) interested in is hearing the 742's JT9D in its early cowling (those with the secondary air inlet doors) live - but those already disappeared from the skies in the early 70's.
But if anyone has a link to a good audio sequence that would be nice.

Here we are chatting away about it and they go and send 4L-GEN into Heathrow as well! I wasn't able to get down there to see it, but hopefully it'll mean it'll come in again.

Yeah I saw that on BigjetTV, very cool for LHR to get that, I wonder how many touchdowns that aircraft did in LHR in its previous life at BA.

ATG9936 I think. Though data seems to be rather inconsistent on these flights. I only remember it came from "somewhere in China" via Nur-Sultan.
