Default Input wanted on airline choices - LHR-SYD

I'm considering a trip to Sydney in October and there are several airline choices out of London. Etihad on A380s connecting in Abu Dhabi; Singapore on A380s connecting in Singapore; British on 777s connecting in Singapore; and Cathay on 777s connecting in Hong Kong.

I fully don't expect any of you have taken this trip, but I'm wondering if any of you have flown on Etihad, Singapore and/or Cathay. Miles-wise, it would be better for me to fly British, but I'd like to experience another airline. Any thoughts on those three airlines? Ta!

My $.02 is fly on an A380 before they are extinct. Can't opine on any of the airlines as to having flown, but Etihad has a good reputation.

That was my line of thinking (which is why I included aircraft type in my original post)! Singapore, Cathay (and Qantas) are all in the top 10 airlines from 2019 but I'd like to get some feedback from a few members on here if I can. In the meantime, I'll do some pricing research.

I can already tell you, Etihad is out. They don't offer a premium economy product and I'm not about to fly for almost 24 hours in economy. Their business class product is £4,170 return from LHR-SYD. So it's now between QF and SQ.

Also assuming A380’s will be left in their respective fleets in 6 months.

For such a flight, important things to consider are the comfort of your seat, seat width, pitch between seats and cabin layout ...

I have taken this trip many times including the four years I lived in London working for Qantas. The other thing to consider is if Australian boarders are open when you want to travel. If you are using frequent flyer points (miles wise) check the rules and Conditions of carriage. Otherwise, if you are considering purchasing a ticket one way or round trip then know this --> No travel insurance policy covers pandemics, they never have and never will! Please understand this. It's your cash so spend it wisely. While I see your proposal on your carriers and routing, may I suggest Qantas Flight 002. QF2 LHR direct to Perth Western Australia on Qantas new 787-9 fleet (miles wise). You may get on Yam Dreaming or the 100 year aircraft if your timing is right and Qantas if flying by then. Enjoy a layover in Perth WA for a day or two and go to Rottenest Island see the Quokka's the small Wallaby like marsupial, rest, see some of Perth, then grab a domestic flight to Sydney. Otherwise, both Qatar and Emirates are cheap and offer A380's via the Emirates Middle East. If you don't like my first Qantas offering Qantas may reintroduce A380's via Singapore if demand requires. I have not looked at their website to be honest. It will be worth a visit on all these carriers web sites.

I would like to also like to add this very important advise. Don't go and part with your money through any travel agents at this time either in shop or any online Travel Agent web sites under any circumstances. Reason being, they could disappear faster than Covid-19 during this vulnerable climate, I am also speaking from experience, while I worked for the Qantas Industry support center for travel agents, fixing travel agents booking mistakes and dealing with previous pandemics like HARS, SARS & 911 tragedy /events & bankrupt agents and their fraud. If you feel the need to book now during a pandemic that's your choice. (I wouldn't advise this to anyone) then, if you must, then you must purchase directly from the airline you choose to fly with on their website. Read the terms and conditions of your purchase (Contract of Carriage) fully understand the terms and conditions of carriage, cancellation or re book fees

If only! It was a dream of mine when I lived in South Florida to fly from JFK-LHR on Concorde with a return in the upper deck of a 747. At least I realised the second part of the dream - three times.

Yes, I watched several YouTube reviews yesterday. Seems Singapore's premium economy seats are more comfortable than Qantas.

If I go forward with these plans, I'll be flying sometime in late October. I didn't know Qatar flies to Australia from London. I'll also check them out. And thanks for the tips regarding other areas of Australia to visit. I have a mate in London who is from Australia. He suggested Brisbane and nearby beaches of Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Forest, among other places. He said there's a place right outside Brisbane where you can feed kangaroos and hold a koala.

Not to worry, I've never booked through a travel website like Expedia or Orbitz, though I use Orbitz to research airlines and flights on specific routes. It's very useful for that. I then go to the airline website to either book or do more research.

Another important factor in this is to fly on an airline that is partners with an airline I have a miles account with. Qantas is airline partners with British; Singapore is airline partners with Virgin.

Thanks for all of the responses. I hope this trip becomes a reality.

Flew this way in 4 different varieties.

One was BA/QF via HKG, which was very nice. Same was BA/CX via HKG, BA/QF via NRT and BA/BA via SIN. If you have spare days, use the BA 15/16 leg and spend 2 days in SIN each way. Always worth a stay. Flew all legs in Business though and all legs had stops in between, apart from SYD-SIN-LHR, which I did on one shot with only 1,5 hour fuel stop in SIN. Enjoyed all of these, still had the pleasure to fly 744 or 743 on some legs.

One Option I would consider always is SIA, but often expensive.

Thanks for your input! Just for the heck of it, I checked BA's website. As you stated, they have flights through HKG, with the HKG to SYD leg via CX. (And the CX flight would be on an A350-1000 which is another aircraft I'd like to fly on.)

Actually SQ was the least expensive of the three I'm considering in premium economy. SQ = £2,471.86; BA = £2,952.66; QF = £3,354.00.

I also checked Qatar given they are the #1 airline. Like Etihad, they don't offer a premium economy product, so they're out.

You are welcome. Via HKG would have been charming via BA, as you could have combined it also with QF and back before Corona they had one leg still with 744. Thats gone now of Course.

Seeing your Details, I would go via SIA now and really try to add at least a day stopver in SIN. It just doesnt only break the endless flying time, but SIN as Destination is Pretty nice and the Airport isnt far away from Downtown. Possibly even worth to check via SIA if they still "Stopover in Singapore"....some flights were eligible to Hotel rest Paid by SIA or at low Prices and City tours. Look out for that….

Safe trip and enjoy ! Sydney is a Dream, best City I have ever been. SYD Airport also nice for spotting.

I'll certainly check into that. I'll have several weeks for this trip, and Singapore is a gorgeous city. If I don't have the ability to stopover, I'll see if it's much more money to break up the trip in two segments. One of my London mates who is from Brisbane took a multi-city trip late last year, Singapore and Sydney being among the cities he visited. He was posting photos on Facebook regularly which only made me want to visit even more.

Cheers!
