Default Question re: 707 vs. 720

I know that most 707 aircraft had turbocompressors on the # 2, 3, & 4 engines, and some had them on all four engines. In looking at photos of 720 aircraft I noticed that most, if not all, had turbocompressors on the # 2 and 3 engines. Why were three needed on the 707, but only two were required on the 720?

Dylan - thank you. Very interesting that the differences are about the level of redundancy needed for the different aircraft.

I always noticed that as well, but now know why it is that way. Great thread you found.
