John Travolta's 707 Cleared for Nov relocation

After more than two years of planning and preparation, Travolta's luxury Boeing 707 aircraft appears cleared for touchdown at its new home.
Civil aviation authorities are set to grant a special permit to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society to allow the plane to be flown from the United States to its new home at Albion Park, south of Wollongong.
The Hollywood star has even blocked out a month of his schedule to allow him to travel on the plane and be part of its handover.
"It [the special permit] opened up a huge opportunity of doing it sooner than later, so we've taken that option and we've planned for a November arrival," HARS president Bob De La Hunty said.
"John Travolta has made available the month of November to give us some flexibility.

"He is very passionate about this aeroplane and he realised he didn't have the engineering resources to deal with it over the future.
"So in giving it to us, he could see we could take a lot of care with it."
Transport price tag now dramatically lower

Mr De La Hunty and Travolta have developed a friendship over the years after the Illawarra pilot took the Hollywood star for a flight on a 1955 Super Constellation along the NSW coast in 2009.

He said the museum needs to raise another $300,000, much less than the $3 million price tag originally thought.
The museum has been consistently gathering money from public and private donors.
Museum volunteers highly qualified to look after plane

The Boeing 707 was previously owned by Qantas, the company Travolta is an ambassador for.
Many of HARS' retired pilots and flight engineers have not only worked on Qantas 707s, but Travolta's plane specifically.
"He didn't want to give it up when he donated it to us, but we have over 700 volunteers and about 200 of them were with Qantas," Mr De La Hunty said.
"We've got all those engineers that worked on this very aeroplane, so they're very familiar with it.

"To him, it made common sense than leaving it to be scrapped or parked in a museum."
He said the actor has already said he would like to fly the Super Constellation with him again when he visits the Illawarra.
Part of the 707 handover involves registering it as an Australian aircraft, which means Travolta will not be allowed to be in the cockpit as originally hoped.
Instead, it will be piloted by an experienced crew from HARS with Travolta on board alongside a hand-picked group of volunteers who have worked on the project.

I bet that John Travolta's 707 is in Hanger 96 on the 16th of November for Qantas 99th Birthday.

Who's coming down to watch the landing in illawarra? I will have to take my model and see if JT can sign the Box and the display stand for me if I leave it with HARS people

I am a big fan of the HARS museum having the fortunate opportunity of multiple visits over the years..Whats even more odd is right after my last visit, only a few short weeks later I found myself at Brunswick airport in GA where the Travolta plane was being stored awaiting permits to fly it out. There is a wing spar corrosion issue that is holding it up, but I assume this has been sorted out?

I live only 45 minutes from John Travolta maybe I should take my model and box to him! yeah right that's a pipe dream...:D

I used to see the 1:1 at the ramp at LAX. I also have one of the magazines celebrating the anniversary of Qantas that featured Travolta and the 707. However, I did not pick up the IF200 version. Too many others in line for the collection before this one! Vaguely remember a post somewhere on DA.C about IF200 getting some details wrong on the plane. Looks good to me, but I don't have superhuman eyesight! LOL

If you hang around the airport Russ late October you should see a lot of activity. If you have ever seen the return of Qantas first 707 DVD or seen it on youtube you will see a lot of test are done including aborted take off brake testing and some flight testing I would assume in front of the FAA. You might even see Mr Travolta Russ so if you got two of the inflight models take the both every visit with felt tip pen and fingers crossed you might even see JT. Also take a HD cam corder and camera for your own personal shots of one of a very few 707's flying. Should be awesome. I might add HARS are still looking for donations. If anyone wants to chip in visit their website. It's a good cause.

Gemini Jets made a corporate donation to that museum on our last visit and we briefly met the A380 Check Captain of that ill fated flight just months before the crash...His hands were covered in grease working on one of the planes...who knew..

Yes it was a very tragic incident and a huge shock. Hope he is doing well now.

Great to see the GJ also presented a donation that is a very nice gesture worth a mention

Will they refurbish the interior to bring it back to how it was when in service?
