Default American 191 40 years ago

Tomorrow, May 25, will mark the 40th year since the worst (non terror) airplane accident in US history occurred. The accident happened on a Friday afternoon. The 25th just happens to fall on a Saturday this year. It was a sunny, warm afternoon at Chicago O'Hare. N110AA was the DC-10 assigned to operate 191 on this day. Many passengers were actually going to Hawaii. LA was basically a tech stop for the flight. I include a link which have been recently added to the internet. The photo of the actual flight taxing to runway 32R really bothered me. Little did anybody know what was about to happen. The only good thing that can come from an accident, is changes to ensure it doesn't happen again. Several were made after 191. The stick shaker being mandatory(no longer optional)on both sides was a major one.

Any airplane accident is horrible and tragic. AA 191 has stuck with me all these years, Still bothers me to this day. I simply thought it was appropriate to mention this significant (although sad) day in aviation history.

That flight, along with many other DC-10 crashes had to do with lazy maintenance workers not adhering to McDonnell Douglas's own maintenance manual, and a lax of oversight from the respective airlines.

To this day, I hate, hate people who bring up the DC-10 whenever there is a current-day aviation tragedy. The plane was a magnificent machine. The people who were tasked with maintaining her were NOT.

I agree. Douglas got word that some airlines were doing short cut engine/pylon changes. They were all warned in writing, this IS NOT to be done. The accident airplane had engine 1 changed in Tulsa I believe it was approx. 6 weeks before the crash. The cracks to flange kept getting bigger with each cycle, until that day at Chicago, it finally broke. When you cut corners, you are asking for trouble.

I believe that was another DC-10 crash your talking about, the cargo doors were not a issue on this particular flight 191..

I am referring to the above comment. Many of the other DC10 crashes had to do with the cargo doors and not the LAZY MAINTENANCE WORKERS!

This is DC-10_Tony we’re talking about here. I’m convinced it stands for Damaged Cranium-10 times_Tony. This character is pure emotion with zero reality. It’s obvious by his many misinformed posts that this guy does ZERO research or fact checking before he posts. And he hates Kittens.

I vote that we give DC-10_Tony his own private section of the forum, where only he can read and post--a safe space, if you will, since regular DA.C seems to be too intense for him. Besides, he already has half of the forum on his block list. The guy is probably offended by most G-rated movies... if he can even follow the plot, given the cranium damage. Speaking of that, I think a more appropriate handle would have been "DC-1011_Tony" since 1,011 makes more sense for the number of times he has probably suffered cranium damage, judging by the content of his posts. I also wouldn't be surprised if he once thought a DC-1011 was a real plane. And he also hates puppies.

It's hilarious. There's literally like three members' comments here that I thankfully can't read. Thanks DA.C for the blocking option. It's much more peaceful to skim through a thread.

I know this thread is from May. I came across this sequence of photos. I had read rumours that they existed, until now, I have never seen them. Taken by a passenger, landing at that exact moment.
