Qantas announces special Indigenous aircraft livery

Sydney | Published on 18th January 2018 at 9:07

Print Friendly Version
Qantas will honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with a special livery on its newest Dreamliner to enter the fleet.
This will be the fifth design in Qantas’ flying art series, which started more than 20 years ago, and will be unveiled when the Boeing 787-9 is completed next month. It will be the second flying art aircraft currently in service with the national carrier and the only one dedicated to international flights.
The unique livery reflects the long, rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and is in keeping with the airline’s commitment to championing reconciliation and promoting the best of Australia to the world.
The latest design has been conceptualised by leading Indigenous owned design studio Balarinji, which has developed all of the flying art aircraft.
The new Dreamliner carrying the special livery (registration VH-ZND) is the fourth to enter the fleet, and will be welcomed into Australia with a special arrival event in Alice Springs in early March 2018 before entering service on routes like Melbourne-Los Angeles and Perth-London.

From what I have read the aircraft will roll out of the Boeing's paint shop in February so it wont be long before reveal. The aircraft has a special presentation in Alice Springs (outback) in March

So Boeing will apply all markings? I ask,as 'Wunala Dreaming 2' was delivered all red, with the art work being applied by Qantas I assume?

Airfares are very expensive on Qantas Link the all Qantas regional subsidiaries they sure know how to charge, they always have. Speak to 90% of any Australian's and they have never been to outback Australia and the airfares have a lot to do with that Russell. Try webjet.com.au to find the lowest fares or flightcentre.com.au It would have been pretty special if you could have made it to the Aboriginal welcome and blessing of the aircraft. I guess someone will youtube it. I am sure it will be in Hanger 96 for a party which you might attend. You couldn't get a more sure bet that this aircraft VH-ZND Qantas will used on Qantas's inaugural Non Stop Perth to London direct service to start in March. Now that's a flight to get a ticket on.

Dave , Boeing did the artwork for Yananyi Dreaming and Mendoowoorrji too and delivered these direct to Qantas. I don't know for sure but the Qantas press statement I posted above quotes

"This will be the fifth design in Qantas’ flying art series, which started more than 20 years ago, and will be unveiled when the Boeing 787-9 is completed next month." end quote. FEB 2018. It also goes on to say that Qantas will take delivery in March. The first three Dreamliners Qantas have so far, have been used on domestic services for crew training. Qantas look like their in a real big hurry to get the keys of Boeing for this one. So my guess is that Boeing are working off Balarinji Design Studio's Artworks for the aircraft even if the Balarinji people are not there in person. I bet that they are in Everette Seattle, overseeing the whole Artwork now.

Cheers Steve

A update for you on VH-ZND Yam Dreaming
Qantas unveils indigenous livery Boeing 787-9

Qantas has revealed images of its fourth 787-9 in the paintshop at Boeing’s Everett facility just outside Seattle featuring a special indigenous livery.
Qantas says the new livery is based on a work by the late Northern Territory artist and senior Anmatyerre woman, Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Her 1991 painting, Yam Dreaming has been adapted for the aircraft by leading Indigenous-owned design studio Balarinji.

After emerging from the paintshop the aircraft, VH-ZND, which is to be named Emily Kame Kngwarreye, will undergo flight testing before being ferried to Alice Springs for a special welcome event on March 2.

“As the national carrier we’re thrilled to showcase another piece of Indigenous culture on one of our aircraft, and to reiterate our ongoing commitment to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said.
“It’s a beautiful, bold artwork and so we hope it catches people’s eye and sparks a conversation about our country’s dynamic Indigenous culture.”
There was a sneak peek of the tail in late January when some images were posted on Twitter.
VH-ZND’s delivery next month will shortly be followed by the start of nonstop flights between Perth and London on March 24 2018, linking the continents of Australia and Europe with regularly scheduled passenger flights for the first time.
Three 787-9s have already been delivered and are currently operating Melbourne-Los Angeles flights.
Qantas has had five aircraft – two Boeing 747-400s, one Boeing 747-300 and two 737s – painted with four different designs of Indigenous art designed in partnership with the Balarinji studio.
Previously, Wunala Dreaming featured on two Boeing 747-400s (VH-OJB from 1994-2003 and 747-400ER VH-OEJ from 2003-2011). The artwork was inspired by the Yanyuwa people from the Gulf of Carpentaria and a celebration of the “reproduction of all living things in the continuing harmony of nature’s seasons”.
The other Indigenous scheme aircraft currently in service is Boeing 737-800 VH-XZJ, Mendoowoorrji, which Qantas said was inspired by Paddy Bedford’s painting Medicine Pocket and “captures the essence of Mendoowoorrji, Bedford’s mother’s country in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia”.
“It’s been a privilege to work with the brilliant imagery of the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye to create the airline’s fifth iconic Indigenous flying art aircraft. Emily was an extraordinary artist who is revered around the world,” managing director of Balarinji, Ros Moriarty, said.
“Born in 1910, she began painting only in later life, completing more than 3,000 exceptional works up until her death at 86 years of age. Her work embodies her cultural and spiritual connections to her country.”

Nice, but still a low-cost version of Wunala and Nalanji IMO.

When I read that Yam Dreaming was owned & on permanent display in my local Arts centre, (Campbelltown)I went there last Saturday to check it out. Amazing how the artwork was picked apart by Balaringi Design Studios for two years before working out what to use and where it worked best on the Boeing 787-9 aircraft. I was going to show you the art work of a picture I took, but rather you can Google "images" yourself and type in Yam Dreaming to see Emily's work if you are interested.

What you will love is this new YouTube video of this aircraft released today 02 March 18 of VH-ZND going through the Boeing Paint shop that was there for 10 or 11 days or so instead of just a day or two. This Aircraft arrived today on a delivery flight straight into Alice Springs where this Special Yam Dreaming aircraft was presented to Emily's family. How beautiful for them. Well done Qantas & Balarinji

Here is the link to the painting of the aircraft : - Qantas Dreamliner VH-ZND Livery Creation

or if the link doesn't work YouTube search : - Qantas Dreamliner VH-ZND

I hope joy enjoy it

Touch down in Alice Springs 02/MARCH/2018

I've read comments online on other sites expressing disappointment that the livery does not cover the entire fuselage, but I think it is beautiful just the way it is.
