Default What's your favorite alliance?

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I find it fun to think about airline alliances like you're picking a football team. I imagine some men in suits taking turns picking airlines for their team, like the NFL draft or some kids picking teams in kickball.
"I choose Cathay Pacific" and the crowd cheers...

Anyway, we're not picking an airline dream team today, although that would be fun too. In this case, just pick your favorite alliance as they exist now.
And don't overthink it. Don't factor in frequent flyer benefits, etc. This is just for fun.
Pick the one with the most good airlines that you might actually want/need to fly on to get to destinations. The best aircraft, the best service, etc etc. Look at the big picture.

I don't have a favorite but if i had to choose, maybe Star Alliance, they are the largest and they got Singapore & Lufthansa, both of which are nice carriers to fly with...

Ah... very true. Those are two strong players. I picked OneWorld partly because Cathay Pacific and American do codeshares and American is decent (as far as US carriers go)... but yeah, Lufthansa and Singapore might have them beat.

Cathay Pacific was great when I flew them last year but people say they aren't what they used to be... and their aircraft don't have the nice moodlighting that you might expect from a top carrier.

One World for the Cathay Pacific

Though I think the strongest alliance is the Star Alliance. It is really hard to beat Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines

I'll go for the 'Vanilla Alliance' and it's Indian Ocean carriers

Out of the 'big 3' it seems to me that oneworld is missing some huge areas, noticably China...surprised by that to be honest. I mean CX have a few trunk routes from HK but the Skyteam must have a vast domestic access with China Southern and Eastern. Star and Skyteam have snagged all the Chinese domestic carriers between them. Plus Cx are not the powerhouse they once were, now China is so much more open.

Of the 3 I would say that oneworld is at the biggest risk of demerging with member airlines joining the other two or probably even wholly alagamating with one of the others perhaps? Who knows. They certainly have the crappest hub in Europe With LHR, which is definitely not suitable at all to transfer traffic...they have too many achilles heal that the other 2 don't seem to have.

Under Cathay Pacific, there is one subsidiaries called “Cathay Dragon”. It basically connects Hong Kong to most China major cities. Though it is true that the network is still not as thorough as those from China Eastern and China Southern.

Though I reckon that outside China, Skyteam is the weakest.

yeah American would also be my choice, not so much Delta or United. what i like of American is flying with their subsidiary American Eagle, the fly mostly to small towns & places and they have a strong present at MIA. AA also flies to almost every major city in all of Latin America as well and are the sole carrier of Puerto Rico. but speaking of SIA it's hard to beat them, they fly everywhere, for example you wanna travel to Australia, no need to fly with Qantas, just fly with SIA or wanna visit Dubai, well they also fly that way or Johannesburg or Hong Kong...
