He is blowing smoke, in the hopes that Boeing will capitulate on some of the cost. In reality they have no other choice but to go with Boeing for AF1 and Boeing knows it, who else are they going to buy from? No chance of them buying from Airbus, and having AF1 be on the a350 or a380 airframe, that would just be unamerican .

Trump will buy Airbus. Lets see where the laugh meter is on that? I'm sorry,I don't want this to be a political thread, but I can't picture him on that stunning airplane.

you might be correct, maybe Mr. Trump will indeed buy from Airbus and sent the bill to the poor Mexicans and have them pay for it!!

Let's face it, though. The 747 is a dead program. Anyone showing the slightest bit of interest would get a great deal except when it's the government in which case...bend them over has always been the philosophy.

It's not like the VC-25s fly every day, but they are 25 yrs old will need to be replaced sometime. Since the Secret Service wants a 4-engine plane, it's either the 747 or the A380, and you KNOW they won't go to Airbus!

I can just imagine that...going to the lowest bidder. The work can be good, fast or cheap, but not all three.

Thats a great ideer, but wait, it ain't gonna work that way!

Here's the thing, in order for the Boeing Co. to develop and test two new missionized VC-25's (I think thats the AF's designation) there is an extreme amount of build integration between BCA - Boeing Commercial Aircraft & BDS - Boeing Defense Systems (military side of BCA) that must take place while the wings and airframes go through the factory to manufacture such a military derivative aircraft from a commercial platform. There literally hundreds of miles of additional wiring that are common to AF1 for the Presidents living quarters, personal office spaces for the President and onboard White House staff, as well as the onboard situation & conference rooms, Satcom communications systems as well as countermeasure equipment and lots of other top secret stuff that no other commercial 747-8I with would ever see. That's not something you can simply retrofit after the fact by the lowest bidder. Outsourcing to a third party contractor is somewhat logistically impossible to be honest given the sensitivity of the export licenses involved.

Hummm, 2 Billion a copy, really? The current list price of a 748I is only at 356.9 Million? Politics aside, I do applaud his willingness to save the US taxpayers some serious coin.

Why wouldn't Donald like an new Presidential aircraft though, he himself would be saving millions in terms of phase maintenance costs by parking his daily driver. These new 748 AF1's will be needed eventually, though. I'd be curious to see the total time and flight cycles accrued on the current AF1 airframes. They are probably the most pristinely maintained 747's on this planet, far beyond any other 742 still flying. Obsolescence and the cost of spare and replacement parts (both airframe and propulsion parts) could be huge factor in the AF's ability to maintain the older 742 AF1's.

I can understand saving money is a big issue with him, but US president using Airbus jets for AF1 is just too unreal...

One of the bigge$t co$t i$$ues is Electromagnetic shielding and hardening. The entire airframe has to be impermeable to the to the ingess of EMC/EMP. Anybody who has done these types of system level tests and certifications will tell you it is not a low cost/low time activity.

Trump may think his 757 is good enough but a manpads or Heaven forbid an EMP will not result in a happy covergenge of airframe and planet.

Electromagnetic shielding and hardening! =BS

With the amount of Nuclear explosions they can harden all they want. Totally useless! It was useless in the first place.

As with a lot of people, speaking/ pontificating about something you know little about can result in being shown something enlightening.

Airways is reporting that the 747s thatvwere supposed to go to Transaero may go to the USAF now. I guess that Korean 747-8 pax might now really be the last one off the line.
