Default American Flags On Hawaiian 717's?

Here is something utterly useless to most, but I can't find the answer....

If anyone knows, please enlighten me. Why does Hawaiian Airlines have the American Flag on their A-330/B-767 Aircraft, but not on the B-717's?

Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian,

I'm not an authority or even pretend to be, but the omission of the American flag on the fuselage of the Hawaiian 717's is most likely due in part to whomever from HAL or Boeing while designing the Hawaiian livery for their 717's deemed it too difficult to place and or un-necessary.

I'm not sure if there's a regulation (CFR Title 14, FAR Part 25) mandating that the aircraft bare the flag of the craft's country of origin much like ships/boats do under maritime law or regulations.

ICBWT - I could be wrong though

Kevin

How about an email to the Hawaiian marketing dept? A reason exists, they didn't just forget. I would be curious to know.

That seem reasonable.... I like Kitty Hawk's suggestion. I think I will email them and see if there is a reason. Thanks.

As I know there is an international regulation about it which applies for international IATA affiliated airlines. Maybe Hawaian is not affiliated?

Does seem a bit strange the flag is on some aircraft and not on one. Perhaps the 717 is only used for island hopping within Hawaii and the flag deemed not required.

You are correct there... the 717's never leave the state. I emailed Hawaiian, so hopefully they will reply. I did try a live chat after logging with my mileage number and had them so confused. They had no idea what I was talking about...

Many Hawaiians consider Hawaii a country.

Aloha was the first airline to attain ETOPS certification on some of their 737-200s to fly to some polynesian islands. At that time, the American flag, with the Hawaiian flag were painted near the rudder. I don't know if the American flag is a FAA requirement.

Hawaiian's A330 and 767 aircraft fly to foreign countries and have the American flag on them. The 717s do not.

I have done several different Google searches trying to find an answer. No luck. It's kind of bugging me now. Why no stars and stripes om the B717?

Article 20 of ICAO Convention on International Civil Aviation : "Every aircraft engaged in international air navigation shall bear its appropriate nationality and registration marks."
You can find it here : http://www.icao.int/publications/Documents/7300_9ed.pdf

So they are not mandatory on domestic flights.
