I fly a lot, and I have TSA Precheck and it is a awesome thing! However, I think that is part of the problem. Let me explain why... Even when you have precheck that doesn't guarantee that it will show up on your boarding pass. So every once and awhile I don't get it. I was in Charlotte the other day and didn't get it, so I had to go through the normal line like everyone else. Charlotte has like 3 or 4 security checkpoints. Usually you can find one that isn't as bad as the others, especially the checkpoint going into Terminal E. However, on this day all of them were horrible. As I waited in line for almost 2 hours I realized that they had a whole lane open just for TSA Precheck, and during the 1 hour and 40 minutes I had to wait in line I'd bet only 8 or 9 people went through the Precheck lane. So here you had hundreds of people waiting in line for hours, and then you have 5 TSA agents working the Precheck lane that only screened 10 people at the most during that time...

Since then I've gotten Precheck, but I made a point to notice the last few times I went through security how many people were using each lane. Same deal in DFW, HNL, LAX.... The list goes on. They have agents operating the Precheck lanes and very few people are using it compared to the normal lanes, and they don't send people from the normal lanes over to the Precheck lanes because they don't have the body scanners. It's very frustrating for the passengers to have waited in line for 2 hours just to see someone walk up and because there boarding pass has a check mark on it they basically get a pass to the front of the line. In the end they definitely need to do something. The lines are ridiculous.

I should note that it was 1 hour and 40 minutes for me to get to the checkpoint. I then had to wait another 30 minutes while my laptop received "additional screening" which usually doesn't take too long. However, on this day they had 1 person doing "additional screening" (again while they had 5 agents doing nothing in the precheck lane) so I literally stood there for 30 minutes waiting for them to get to my computer.

I recently flew SEA-SFO and return and was dreading the screening process, given SEA is one of the worst in the nation for lines. Thankfully, I went through screening in 20 minutes or so at both airports, but I was flying First Class and both airports have dedicated "Premium" screening lines so that helped a lot.

TSA sucks ! The most useless group of individuals in the country. Just another form of government incompetence. We are approaching 15 years since 9/11 and the "security" hasn't improved at all. People are still getting through with knives, guns and drugs.........and those are just the TSA agents !!!

Why the hell do I need to pay extra money for a 'pre-screen' pass to get through the TSA line quicker? Why can't the security process simpler and more efficient so everybody can benefit? After all, I'm paying for this crap with my taxes and, like everything else the government handles, I never get the bang-for-the-buck. Give it to private industry to handle.

Can't wait to see how government-run healthcare works. There are going to be a lot of people dying in the coming years.

Kind of unrelated, but... in response to sla31, I'm flying CX out of Newark in a couple days. I got Global Entry which includes TSA PreCheck, but from what I understand, Cathay doesn't participate so they won't print it on the boarding pass. Not a huge deal since I'll still have a quicker time at customs when I return, and I'll have PreCheck for other domestic flights.
Hope they get this under control.

MrMD11 I could not agree with you more.

This is almost as embarrassing to this country as when congress shut down the government a few years ago.

This is truly an embarrassment to our country from around the world. Those airports considering to have a private security firm perform screening should just go ahead and do it. Don't threaten to do it, dump the inefficient, non-performing, inadequate, frustrating, disgusting TSA. Fifteen years is a long enough time to perfect a procedure.

Pre-check is good but there are still those directed to the pre-check lines that do not have it just to alleviate the inefficiency of their own workers.

So much to say about this.

I think it was Obama who shut down the government by not accepting what congress wanted. But that's not important.
It was embarrassing.

And you're right.... I hadn't thought of it this way before, but if its been 15 years and they're still terrible, there is something wrong.

Another solution to this fiasco would be to construct new, modern airports in the U.S. Seems that the rest of the world has enhanced their aviation infrastructure while the U.S. lags behind. The U.S. hasn't had a new airport since the opening of Denver International over twenty years ago.

Time to reduce (if not eliminate) to foreign countries who don't need it and tell the environmentalists to go pound sand - two of the biggest reasons why I believe that infrastructure development has remained stagnant.

Don't do much flying out of US airports, but returned home through JFK on CX a few weeks ago and expected a long queue. Though despite a fairly busy night time departure bank, security was quick. Again, that's just one experience though and most people I know always complain about TSA wait times specifically at LAX.
