Gees, I think they have more than enough A380s. They already have like 76 and they are ordering 66? They have too much money...

Can anyone tell me why the A380 needs (allegedly) replaced with a Neo, after less than ten years of in service flying ? Just how more efficient can engines be in that sort of time scale ?

I can't imagine how they can have so many that are profitable enough to order another 66.
I feel like for the average airline a plane like the A380 only works on extremely dense routes. They evidently have decided it works for them, I guess.

They want a NEO because even a 5-10% fuel savings would add up big time. I'm not sure if they could achieve that but if they did, it would quickly add up to huge savings.
But, the fact that they'd still buy them even without a NEO option shows that they want them bad enough. To me, that will make it a lot less likely for Airbus to put the R&D costs into a revised NEO model.

They've gone crazy. A cap should be placed on them for the number of planes they can order.

You do realise how daft that statement is don't you?

I love seeing the A380 fly into LHR, that gull wing is a thing of beauty. Emirates are putting plenty of special liveries on their aircraft as well which is a bonus. The a380 obviously meets their needs and expansion, so long may they order more.

They seem to be making plenty of money since they operate out of tax friendly Dubai. If they want to order more A380s then more power to them. Emirates takes planes out of their fleet at a relatively young age and the article indicates that most (if not all) of these new orders would be to replace A380s they retire.

I think the interesting thing will be to see what happens to those A380s that Emirates retires and if other airlines that aren't currently operating it will take a chance on cheap and relatively young second hand four hole jumbos. If fuel prices stay down we may be surprised with who picks them up.

As daft as it sounds, EK have gone way over their head and my concern is for the other airlines which if they carry on at the rate they are going, they will push every other airline into the background and gobble everything up in an unfair monopoly.

Dubai isn't going to be too tax friendly anymore. They are in the process of introducing VAT and other taxes which not many like to talk or even think about and its certainly no tax haven.

Also alot of the a/c EK have taken out of service have ended up in boneyards as they are known for running their planes into the ground. It won't be easy finding a/c operating with other airlines which are ex-EK.

I'd have to imagine these would be ordered to replace their older frames and leased aircraft when those run out.

Next year is when the original leases end for the first A380s like Singapore. It will definitely be interesting to see who if anyone picks up them up second hand. I still don't see any US carriers taking on some, but I guess you never know.

Qantas has options on eight and it is very unlikely they will take them up and Malaysian were looking to offload theirs at one stage. It seemed a good idea at the time decision to go ahead and build it but having one exclusive customer keeping the line ticking over you wonder how long it will stay in production.

Air France also cancelled their last 2, and Virgin Atlantic will probably never take the ones the ordered. I believe Emirates will buy all they order, but agree that Airbus can't just rely on one customer to keep the A380 going.

There's not too many hub airports in the world ideally suited for mass operation of the A380 on these trunk routes like Dubai but it's hard to see where Emirates would get the market to sell off so many of their early production A380's to make way for the neo.
