I wonder if this aircraft will be writen off or repaired. How many 777 write offs would this bring us up to? I want to guess 5 but I'm not really sure. 2 Malaysia, 2 British and 1 Asiana?

You are correct, the 777 has suffered from five hull-loss accidents.

According to wiki, one BA; one EgyptAir; two Malaysia; one Asiana.

Amen to that! Still, a dangerous situation with the passengers evacuating amidst all that thick smoke. Glad the slides seem to have deployed as designed.

Purely speculative but I wonder if the brakes caught on fire during the aborted takeoff? The brakes are not supposed to catch fire for 5 minutes till fire trucks arrive but in this case they might have?

Or was it an uncontained left engine explosion that caused the fire?

Either way pretty bizarre but nonetheless it is remarkable that no one was seriously injured despite the emergency evacuation!

And some of the pictures show people doing the Epic No No...emergency evac and they've got their carry on luggage. What is wrong with these phucking retards?

If you were in that situation would you ignore evac procedures in a similar circumstance and had the opportunity to do so? I think most people would.

Nope my spare underwear isn't that important - valuables such as wallet and passport etc are in my pocket. Overhead bags can burn.

At this point, the pilot is quoted as saying "catastrophic failure" of the left engine. I guess we will know more soon.

The number of injuries has now increased to 14, but they are minor - sustained while using the evacuation slides.

Didn't BA have a serious fueling incident in Houston several years ago with a B777? I believe it involved a fatality? Not to be a ghoul bringing it up,but yesterdays incident made me think that something else happened with a Speedbird B777 in America at some point.

That I don't recall but for sure Lloyd's of London is not going to be very happy with their national airline to say the least.

Yes, back August 2004 another BA 777 lost an engine after take-off but returned to Houston and made an emergency landing. No fatalities. Cause was the failure of a fan blade. Both aircraft utilising GE90-85 engines.

I think it's safe to say that the airframe will be WO. Excellent job by the BA crew to evacuate the aircraft in a safe & effective manor. Will be interesting to see what caused this, I haven't done too much reading on it so my first two guess would engine failure or brake fire.

Luckily for everyone , the pilot was able to abort takeoff . It would have been a much different outcome if it had got off the ground - not just an engine fire this one ?????
Tyres are stii inflated so not a brake fire.

Why is this always happening it seems with British Airways & their 777 aircraft... Is this incident not the third time it happens with a 777 owned by BA... It's very odd that after the very tragic accident with Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 & the other one that's still missing, that this has to happen with yet another Boeing 777 airliner, I always thought this aircraft was a very safe airplane...

It's been engine issues both times for BA not the 777 itself and most certainly foul play in both the Malaysia incidents too.

Good job for the fire service being on scene in 2 minutes from what I understand. That is really good time. Alarm go's,protective gear on,and drive to the scene and spraying her down before the rigs even stop. Glad we are talking about an insurance claim on the airplane, and not something more serious.

I have to agree with you on that, it's kinda scary to think about it, that BA will keep the aircraft flying after all the repairs are done...

Couldnt agree more... your both right on that..can you imagine a team of highly specialized Boeing engineers based in Las Vegas for months fixing that plane using duct tape, bondo and glue..Oh and then the FAA inspectors too signing off on it after being up all night in the casino???

Are you serious???? It will probably be the most inspected and safest 777 flying anywhere out there in the world..

Id be the first to sign up and fly on it...

I suspect the damage is mainly to skin and not structure, it also probably looks worse than it is. If qualified aeronautical engineers have deemed it repairable then who are we to wonder why ? To be honest I've seen far worse repaired and flown again, the BEA Trident (G-ARPI) that got clobbered on the ground by a crashing Airspeed Ambassador at Heathrow in the late 60's springs to mind. Although the repaired aircraft did eventually stall on take off and crash at Staines several years later...

Think before you post...
Of course it will be as good as it was before the accident or even better when Boeing and the FAA give their go, but for me it is also a surprise that BA will repair this B772, built in the final 1990 year.. I am sure that there must be damage inside the cabin as well and it will cost a lot to fix the fuselage and the wings.. Must be a very close write-off, but I am sure BA has calculated every aspect of the repair.. After the accident of BA's B744 clipping the wing and the scapping later on in Africa, I feared this will be the next one.. Good to see this B772 coming back!

I dunno, Russell, look what Boeing did to JA8119 (aka JAL Flight 123) when the Boeing technicians repaired the bulkhead from a tail strike seven years prior. But I suspect Boeing has learned from that.

Aircraft can suffer significant damage and be repaired for safe revenue service. Behold the tale of UAL 811, a 747 that experienced a forward cargo door failure inflight, resulting in several passengers being sucked out to their deaths. The flight and cabin crew did an exemplary job at recovery, and the airframe continued to fly with UAL for several years.

I understand the temptation for evacuees to take their carry on luggage with them, but it is a terribly unsafe and unwise practice. It slows the process, potentially creates logjams at exits, and sharp objects can damage the emergency exit slides.

There is a reason for the flight crew command of "Release your seatbelts and get out, leave everything behind." Sadly, many airline procedures are written in blood....

....... I suspect this may have been a fan/compressor blade failure/separation .....

....... it can wreak havoc in a few short spit seconds and can rupture fuel and oil lines and splay outwards from the engine in such a tell-tale fashion as the photo's above depict near the starboard wing root ....... time will tell ....... extremely fortunate this did not happen in an established climb or at flight altitude .....

Anyone know what the status on this BA 777 is? Repaired? Scrapped? Undecided?

I drove right up to it last week, it is still parked at the cargo ramp in full BA colors. the starboard engine is wrapped in clear plastic and the port engine is removed and gone...I guess they are deciding what to do with the insurance company

Yup, it's still parked at the airport here in Las Vegas.

$375 a day in parking fees for a 777-300?

That is almost as much as it costs to park a car each day at SEA-TAC airport!

They probably gave BA a "player" discount from MGM

Not so sure I would want to fly on this plane in the future though …

I couldn't agree more. However;

I always find this perspective curious. Properly qualified and authorised Engineers designed the aircraft to meet very stringent airworthiness requirements that allow safe operation, yet somehow people can't trust those same properly qualified and authorised Engineers to design a repair to meet those same stringent airworthiness requirements that allow safe operation of the aircraft.

It's only okay if your overhead luggage contains a rare 1/400 diecast aircraft that you managed to find whilst abroad.
