Default NCA cancels B748F order

Obviously not a good week for Boeing. It started with two new B787-8 for Kenya Airways that still sit in Seattle, because the airline can't finance the aircraft anymore. Now, Japan's NCA - Nippon Cargo Airlines has confirmed that they cancelled four orders of B747-8F, because of the decreasing demand in Japanese aircargo. That brings the orders for the B747-8 program back to zero for the year 2015 and the production might end next year. The customers are:

Boeing 747-8F (orders/delivered):

- CargoLux: 14/12
- NCA: 10/8 (minus 4)
- Atlas Air: 10/9
- Volga-Dnepr: 5/5
- Korean Air Cargo: 7/6
- Cathay Pacific Cargo: 14/13
- Saudia Cargo: 3/2
- SilkWay Airlines: 5/2
- AirBridge Cargo: 1/1
Backlog: 11 B748Fs

Boeing 747-8BBJ:

- Business Jet/VIP: 9/8
- AF One: TBA
Backlog: 1 B748BBJ

Boeing 747-8I:

- Lufthansa: 19/19 (1 refused to take over from original 20 orders and 20 options)
- Air China: 7/7
- Korean Air 10/1
- Arik Air: 0 (orderd 2 frames, which were converted into B77W)
- Transaero: 4/0 (deliveries have been postponed - instead of filing for bankruptcy bought from rival Aeroflot this week)
Backlog: 9 B748I

That's 21 frames left in total. The AF1 has to be finalized as it is not official how many frames the USAF will order. There are rumours that there might only be one or two B747 orders and several B787 Dreamliner to join the fleet, so lets see..

Sad to learn about this, but on the other hand, Boeing booked a $2.6B order for 27 of their B737-800 aircraft from Jet2.

It's unfortunate indeed but it is what it is ... 4-holers just aren't en vogue anymore ... a 777-300ER or equivalent 777-X is clearly the way to go these days ... the 747 is a remarkable plane but even it's distinctive profile isn't a selling point anymore ... it's ALL about seat-mile costs.

No, only made a commitment for 20 - just a MOU, not an order..

Volga-Dnepr commits to 20 more Boeing 747-8 freighters - Business Insider

Looking at the Russian market right now, it is hard to believe that they will convert them to orders unfortunately..

Lufthansa also had options for 20 more B748Is, which they expired and ordered B777-9X instead..

Sad! I hate to see the 747 come to an end. But, fewer engines is the way to go now. The the 777-300/777X/787 or A350/A330 is the way to go for better efficiencies.

I'm not sure the A380 will be around all that long either except with Emirates who seems to do well with them just based on the quantity if their fleet / economies if scale. I read recently that Singapore is not really thrilled with theirs and we know that Malaysia will be perging their fleet of 6 soon, Thai is looking to sell some of theirs and there area few Skymarks frames yet for Airbus to sell.

Used A380 superjumbos pose fresh threat to Airbus sales drive | The National

Flying just wouldn't be the same without seeing them in the airports. Just the best looking plane in the sky. If you think about it, pretty much every major airline has either 777s or 747s (if not both), which makes me wonder what an airline like Qantas is planning on doing.

As long as that Boeing plant continues to make 747s, I won't stop hoping that a shift in fuel prices or travel preferences will spur a few more orders. After all, the 747 has survived 16 years of competing with the 777.

The cargo market hasn't recovered nearly as much as we hoped therefore airlines don't need as many dedicated freighter frames. Sad to see any 747 orders get cancelled at this point as it only makes the inevitable come quicker.
