Default American Employees Choose New Flag Tail

Well as the title of the thread says American employees have picked the new flag tail to represent American over the old AA logo.

Here is a small piece of the letter from Doug that was just put on American's online employee website.

"The votes are in. After three weeks, much conversation and more than 60,000 employees voting, we now have an answer to the question about what will be painted on the tails of our aircraft. It was very close but the majority has spoken and the new flag tail will proudly represent American Airlines – and all of us – for years to come."

I know there are people on here who would have liked to see the old tail stay, but I for one am glad the new tail is staying. By the way. The vote was 31,355 for the flag, and 29,063 for the old tail. It was a very close vote, but none the less on to the future!

Ugh. Garish. Ugly.

If there were more choices, I think the new tail would have lost.

I'm glad they have. I was down at Heathrow yesterday and the light was pretty much perfect and a 777-300 New livery was closely followed by a 767-300 old livery and, whilst it was nice to see, the old livery really does look like it belongs to a by gone era.

Bye Bye old American. So sad I've never seen you @ SPL.
Well I'm off to DUS to spot the old livery at least one more time.

They could have superimposed the old logo onto the new tail. Wonder what it would look like.

Great marketing move from AA to make so much wind about a topic 99% of their customers don't care about..

I hope they can come up with something better to save the unprofitable American Airlines than this tail design decision.. To me it makes the impression that the heads of the new AA doubt what they do, a sign of weakness.. This launch and reverse-option-vote, - no - , the relaunch again of a new identity does exactly not do what it was intended to be: the confident launch of a new and better AA..

To me the new design is the better option, but does this make me or prevent me from flying AA?

So this scheme stays.... hmmmm guess it will grow over time....

Stars and Stripes is undoubtedly American... i see stripes on the tail but why cant they add some stars in the blue???

Some faint stars in the blue section might help the tail look better

Old tail on new scheme would have looked hideous. It's the lesser of the two terrible options. I still don't understand what is so difficult about putting 13 stripes on the flag.

13 stripes on the tail would have been a nightmare!! I remember that Brussels Airlines added a 14th dot on every of its new designed planes and relaunched their new corporate design because of complains by rather stupid people.. True story..

Perhaps they should put a star on each engine pod. They look rather blah at the moment; heck, the whole fuselage is rather blah except for the tail. Maybe it's the dull-as-sin grey color. I know...., keep the old livery.

Just as well. The new one is perfect for the times. American looks more like Аэрофлот now than Аэрофлот looks like Аэрофлот. Just get it over with already and change the titles to американка and place an order for 30 IL-96s and 100 Sukhoi Superjets.

As an employee of AA, I voted to keep the new flag tail. While the new livery wasn't anything I would have chosen myself, I felt that going back to the old AA and scissor eagle was a step back, and the confusion of having TWO logos, two different fonts and a livery where nothing matched was far worse.

The livery looks far better in person than in photographs, and I think an image change was desperately needed. I felt a new livery was in order when the first 738s and 772s were delivered in 1999, for the new millennium, but that didn't happen.

Yes, the old livery was a classic, but you have to move on and get with the times. The same could be said about DL's classic widget scheme in use until 1997, but they moved on, too. The old livery was awesome on the 707 and 727-100, but those times are over.

And to be honest with you, when I see a bunch of AAL tails at JFK T8 in the distance from the JFK Airtrain, it's the new flag tails that leave the most lasting favorable impression. The old AA tails look bland in comparison.

and this is exactly what I meant.

if there were a third choice - some other new idea - I think it would have won. I doubt that everybody who voted for the new tail actually love the new tail. You can only vote for the choices you are given.

Hi Kevin,

I understand and respect your opinion on this subject. There are many benefits to starting a new brand image. With US Airways and AA merging, it was a timely move.

However, different to be different isn't always to the best way to go. The tail does bug me, but the heavy borrowing of the new eagle logo, (Greyhound Bus), really raised an eyebrow from my perspective. That paired with the new tail design just leave wondering where there was any harmony or balance in this design.

What should have been a revolutionary re-branding just leaves me wanting to see the only airline whose aircraft could been seen from the ground making contrails....a gleaming silver airplane with highly recognizable stripes.

If we had seen a completely new take on AA, such as Braniff did when they switched from the "plain plane", the new scheme would make more sense.

Best,
Herb

Herb,

I can understand how you feel as i've been a big fan of the eagle livery as well.. I had great flights in planes that wore the eagle like the MD-83, B757-200WL, B767-200ER and B767-300ER.. With new technologies entering the market and a needed make-over the possibility of keeping this livery got obsolete.. At the beginning i didn't like the new colors as well, but now the often called piano livery grows on me.. To me the worst US livery will always be Delta's Deltaflot - the new AA tail colors tell everbody where this airline comes from - right away.. It could have been worse and with the merger AA/US need a new start.. I also feel sorry that the US Airways livery ceases to exist as i liked this airline very much as well!

Of course, those people who think any association with 13 is unlucky would likely stay the hell away from US soil anyways! Have you seen the flag that just happens to represent the country?

I don't know why they stopped at 12...

I always associated it more with 1960s-1970s era United than Greyhound:

It's like they're trying to say "Hey look at us, we're the Anti-United!"

Anyways, I've seen concepts on how this would've gone down. Unlike what some suggested here, it wouldn't be a return to the superior classy livery used since 1968. It's the same quiet, but obnoxious mess but with a slightly classier tail that looks out of place. Someone, please introduce these "Graphic Designers" that make these new liveries to Saul Bass. He designed schemes for airlines that looked like they were going to fly tomorrow, not be parked in desert for storage!

I don't think the old tail looked very good on it in the rendering...people don't like change, but that's what needs to happen to progress.

American Eagle Airlines, Inc. (American Eagle Airlines), a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group Inc., announced today that the company will be changing its name to Envoy in spring 2014. This change is being made to give the company its own distinct identity and eliminate the confusion between the company's current name and American Eagle, the regional flying brand of American Airlines, Inc. With the formation of American Airlines Group, the 10 carriers currently providing regional service for the legacy American and US Airways networks will all eventually fly under the American Eagle brand.

"Our people and our company - which is one the largest regional carriers in the world with some of the best people in our business - deserve a name that is all our own," said Pedro Fabregas, the president and CEO of American Eagle Airlines. "By taking on the Envoy name, we can better differentiate ourselves from the competition and better market ourselves. This is important for both our people and our company as we further expand our ground handling business."

American Eagle Airlines has more than 14,000 employees and a growing portfolio of business outside of its flying operations, including a robust aviation ground handling operation. Envoy was chosen as the company's new name after an extensive selection and vetting process that included looking at more than 1,000 names and considering feedback from American Eagle Airlines employees. The name was chosen because Envoy is reflective of what the company does for the airlines it works with - serving as their ambassador and a representative to their customers.

Customers traveling on both American Eagle Airlines and American Eagle-branded regional air service will not experience any changes to their travel experience as a result of this name change. Ticket counters and gates will continue to be branded American and American Eagle and Envoy's aircraft will continue to operate using the American Eagle brand and livery. Once the necessary regulatory processes and approvals are complete, "Operated by Envoy" will be added to the company's aircraft paint scheme and noted on customers' tickets much like it is for American's other regional carrier partners currently flying using the American Eagle brand.

But that livery looks so 1970s now. Classic, yes, but very, very dated. I get so tired of hearing how people are mourning the old livery. And the old AA image was tarnished by the missteps and problems of the AAL of the past decade or so.

I think the new livery looks good in person, it doesn't look as good in online photos. The 767-300WL and the 737-800 wear the new livery particularly well, the new aa.com looks awesome, and the new ticket counters and Flagship Check-In at JFK with the new branding is really classy. It's not that I'm just so pro-AAL that I blindly go along with everything the company does, but it does look better than anything a lot of other airlines have done in recent years. I do also like Delta's current branding and the white and blue look of their new T4 at JFK.

I was really sick of the old livery and branding, and have been wondering for years if/when we'd ever change. To my eyes, the "AA" and scissor eagle look as outdated to me as the International Orange livery of the '50s and early '60s. I like moving forward, and the new livery is a break from the past.
