Default How much you weigh = how much you pay to fly!

Interesting airline fee policy! I heard about this in the past, but I think this is the first time an actual airline has implemented this policy: how much you weigh = how much you pay to fly on our planes! Cheers! T7

and the weight of your bags, too.

I've long liked this idea, since fuel prices became a major part of airlines' costs.

but it may not be easy for major airlines to implement - would you pay an estimate when you make the reservation, and then make an adjustment when you weigh and check in?

Well the thing is airlines would end up losing money on most routes due to this: For one, I would not be willing to pay 224 dollars for a ride from Phoenix to Tucson. For two, I WOULD be willing to pay that for a Los Angeles-Sydney or LA-Tokyo or whatever place far away.

Actually, I imagine it would be a dollar a pound to Tuscon and ten dollars a pound to Sydney.

yes, that's exactly what would happen - distance-dependent rates, and I think even the articles about Air Samoa mention it.

Interesting 1,186+ comments/feedback from the CNN article!

When sending something in the mail (USPS, Fedex, UPS, Canada Post) = we are charged based on the weight of the package; so I can see why there are people who would agree with this new policy by Samoa Air.

You pack 4 heavy (each 225 lbs) adults in a car that is making a road trip from Detroit to Chicago, I would bet that the trip in gas costs would be higher than 4 adults who weigh in on average of 170 lbs each. The extra 220 pounds is gonna cost at the pump for sure!
