American's new 737-800 design changes??
 
Hi folks for this past month i've noticed that the newer american 737-800 has some subtle design changes...first thing i've notice is that the aft under belly is not bare metal anymore the aircraft seem to sit higher now the landing gear struts seem longer? I've notice this everytime i put the beltloaders. Finally the wing design the previous 378's have 3 fairing canoes on each wings the new ones have only 2 canoes only on each wing....the winglits seems thinner and somewhat pointy and they dont have the AA.com on it anymore.

for airplane spotters this newer american 378's has a 737-8 on its nose gear bay doors in yellow/red numbers.

is this subltle changes a prelude to the 737-max? Maybe GJ,hogans,inflights and herpa needs to redisign there 737 mould :eek:;)

any AMR employee knows what im talking about? particularly with the new 737-800

Do you have any tail numbers for reference? I tried looking at newly delivered 737-800s vs the earlier deliveries they dont seem to have much difference other than the aft belly bare metal paint change

I Dunno About Longer Gear, But From What I Understand (And I'm Not An Engineer) To Lengthen The Landing Gear The Wheel Wells Also Must Be Extended To Accomadate It. That Is Not A Subtle Change. You Need To Redesign The Wings As Well. A Costly Venture To Be Sure. I Surmise You Are Referring To The Difference From The 733,734,735s And NGs

@ SgtMoody and VH-OGT: sorry i cant recall the regi numbers on this particular ac but if do see it drop by yyz i try to get some pics.

....maybe try the flight tracker it was AA#1497 YYZ-MIA departs 1010 (jan7,2013)

i really dont know about the landing gears as well but what i do know is that it sits a bit higher compared to the other 378 and this is with pax and luggages loaded already??

I know for sure that the wing design changed. i suspect that this was the NG version??:rolleyes:

as i previously mentioned about the canoes yes it is still 3 on each wing but the design changed it is more slicker and thinner designed which fooled my eyes believing it was only 2 , compared to the old ones which was fat looking...

And Thats What I Mean. The 738 IS A NG And It Does Sit Taller And Second Generation Models, However I Seriously Doubt Such A Significant Change Was Made Between Earlier 738s And Current Ones.

Aft belly has been painted to help prevent corrosion.

Uh...AFAIK, all 737-800s have three flap track fairings on each wing. This includes both the older ships and the newer ships. The only differences between American's older and new -800s are that the newer ones have the protective gray paint along the aft belly and the VERY new ones have modified engine exhaust hot sections (shorter). The gear is the same and the winglets are the same.

came in this morning so i took some shots of the newer AA 737 ng?

i retract my comment on my previous post about the canoes,the newer ones still have the 3 canoes, the shape of the new ones is/are different from the previous models. the new wings are more slicker/clean look to them.
about the gears it is still sitting high.

the one 737 in the fog was the older version just comparing the height with the new ones.

The only change in the hight of the 737 fuselage will occur with the 737 Max. The front landing gear is lengthen for ground clearance of the new engines. But to do this the fuselage had to be redesigned to accommodate the change. If you look at pictures of the 737 Max, you will see a slight bulge in the nose for the landing gear.

perhaps the aircraft sits slightly higher due to a lighter load? just a stab-in-the-dark guess...

This is not a new design change, it is the result of the location of the lavatory service port, which is at the rear of the A/C. The 737NG (-600-900ER ) uses a vacuum system which condenses all the waste to one tank, because of this a "blower" is required which is located near the L2 door. As a result of the location of both the blower and the service port, AA found that this is where a good part of the corrosion occurred. Also if you notice on any other A/C with a polished surface, where ever there is a lavatory service port it is typically painted grey.

Maybe its sitting higher do to someone already mentioning a lighter load of fuel or pass and bags. Also maybe the X dimension on the landing gear is different between the two different airplanes. Making one sit higher than the other.

The blister on the bottom of the nose to accomodate the lengthened gear was actually removed after additional modifications were made to the design of the gear:

well in the topic of Boeing's 737s while working today something pulled right beside our gate....its the grand daddy of 737 this is the old school $#!t. back in the daysLOLLOL...just got to take pics to share with you guys...i believe this was a chartered flight and this plane was originaly a pax plane then converted to cargo then back to pax..enjoy

The yellow lettering on the nose gear doors is something AA is doing on all new deliveries, to indicate aircraft type. The still-unfinished 777-300ERs also have the yellow aircraft type lettering on the nose gear doors. It's a little garish, in my opinion. I hope the new livery isn't as tacky.

VH-OGT, The aircraft shown in the video (L/N: 4106-YR730) was decaled as the eco-Demonstrator while in the Flight Test inventory during the initial instrumentation layup and flown under an experimental airworthiness certificate to prove out and showcase new technologies and concepts in a partnership with NASA and the FAA in Washington D.C. I was with her in Glasgow, Mo. While on remote testing. She has since been refurbished, decals removed (returned to her type certificate, production configuration). AA took delivery of her 11/20/2012. She's now in revenue service registered as N897NN, at a gate or in the air somewhere around the world........:cool:

Yea, every couple of days as I get off work I see the JANET 737`s landing at LAS. I noticed that most of them have had their old engines swapped out for the newer ones. But every once in a while you still see a 737 with the old long engines. If I had a decent camera I would be able to get some good pics...But I dont.

JANET switched from the 737-200 to the 737-600. They did not have "their old engines swapped out for the newer ones." They're completely different aircraft.

We have brand new 738s in storage here parked next to older 738s there is no difference that I can see. There would need to be STCs etc. if these changes had taken place (thinner wing/lets, higher gear etc).

Thanks Kevin, I realized it wouldn't have been in commercial service due to the Experimental designation of the AC. Interesting nonetheless, do you work with Boeing? Looking forward to seeing the MAX in the air...

Beautiful detail pics beltloader. I'll have to update my 738...which I drew back in the early 2000's.
Btw: Have booked AA to San Antonio from NYC. Equipment on the return via Dallas is 738. Will put together some pics and video when I return.
