United officially has the keys and she's in Houston tonight. Service starts in 37 days! Is anybody else going for a ride on 11/4?

I will be on the first revenue flight IAH-ORD 11/4

Also, I was at IAH to see the 787 come in for the first time! What an experience!

A lot of current airliners seem to suffer from 'one-looks-the-same-as-the-other' syndrome. And while the Comet, Caravelle and Concorde are considered by many to be among the most beautifully designed jetliners, considering what is flying today, I suspect the 787 will earn a spot in that special group, as it does possess some very striking design attributes. Of course, it is pretty technically advanced too.

Better than the old 777's? A lot of guys may take issue with that, as that aircraft is well-loved. Frankly, as much as I really admire my GJ models of it, I have to admit it really just looks like an overgrown A320 to me. Mind you, to see one come right over you on a landing approach, gear down, will give anyone a new respect for the 777.

Great shots, Jack! I'll shoot you my contact info if you want to try and get together before departure on the 4th. Are you doing the turn back to IAH?

Not entirely impressed with UAs cabin product on the 787.

You are not the only one! I like it too!

I do wish the first one had an extra extra special livery though!

Love how the airplane looks from the outside, but have to say that interior is completely uninspired and cheap looking. What defines this cabin as new and revolutionary?...nada. (See the current Airways Magazine and check out the Finnair A330 business cabin. Same ugly cheap plastic construction). I was just as disappointed when i saw the Air India Biz interior. Washed out yellow and orange seats without any hint of the Indian culture. They're know for textiles. This could have been any number of unknown charter cabins. Absolutely no identity.

The UAL biz seats are narrow and staggered - and block the windows. I couldn't sit with someone directly next to me just out of my field of sight staring over my shoulder. Most of the US domestic business and first class compartments now look like study cubicles at the library. This 787 interior is dull as dishwater. What happened to upholstered bulkheads, wood accents, a vase of flowers, etc?
The coach cabin actually looks friendlier...but look at the width of those seats? Could you imagine taking a nine or ten hour flight in that seat? Perhaps if you're a twelve year old child.

In a nutshell: I'm about as "Pro-tech" as they come, but the 787 interior is a big fail imo. Where did all the amazing interiors slip away to when it was announced? These "new" interiors have nothing to do with technology and more to do with stuffing as many souls aboard as possible...in every class. It looks like everyone that ordered it chose from bland and cheap option A, B, or C. These interiors reflect any anonymous airline at any ticket price from anywhere in the world. A complete neuter of a carriers indentity.

Having actually flown on the 787 a fair few times now, albeit not with UA obviously, I have to say that the interior isn't the best. Surprisingly it's very 'plasticky'. It does have some really nice features (e.g. the windows and the mood lighting) - but overall the interior just doesn't feel like a 'quality' ride. And it doesn't 'wow' you or feel very futuristic either. You're all going to come down on me for pointing this out but... having been on the A380 lots too, the quality of the cabin and its fitments on that bird is very noticeably quite a way ahead of the 787. Just check out the difference in detailing between them. Dare I say it's a bit like cool Apple (A380) v flashy Lenovo (787)?

I don't mind calling a spade a spade here. For all the hype, the front of the airplane,(expensive end), looks like it was done by Rubbermaid. I've never seen so many cheap finishes in one airplane. The seats as well have shrunk in size and quality. Biz seats look like coach seats put into plastic bath tubs.
This new airplane suffers from lack of identity for each airline it represents. A total anti-climax for what is supposed to be a game changer.
