Lightbulb How about a CX A380! (or how proportion is important)

OK... On the American A380 proposal thread, Doc asked if I thought that the proportions of this beast would effect a livery and how would that be handled. Here is an example:

Fig. A is how the CX livery would be applied according to standards used on aircraft currently in their fleet. The problem is, it accenuates the "high forhead/fat body" aspect of the plane's design. instead of slimming it as cheat liveries are supposed to do, it makes it look top heavy and off balance.

Fig. B is my proposal for how to deal with this problem. By widening the green/grey field and moving the upper line higher as well as pushing the titles above the lower deck windows, a slimmer appearence is achieved. This is basically how the 747 is done in the current CX fleet. The issue here is that as on the 747, the dark green and speedwing logo must move up too. Since the 747 has a high cockpit, this graphic detail falls below the windshield, and thus matches the design specification set by Landor.

The A380 however, has a between decks cockpit. The only logical solution is to ignore the Landor design spec and align the dark green/speedwing detail with the windscreen. The result satisfies the need to slim the plane and scale the graphics to meet visual needs, but in doing so, loses some of the common brand recognition carried through the existing CX fleet. The plane looks slimmer and balanced, but seems in an odd way (that most travelers won't be able to put a finger on.) less like a Cathay Pacific than it should

So you see, it will be a give and take proposition as this plane comes on-line. I suspect that many airlines that don't use EuroWhite schemes will begin re-addressing their liveries once taking delivery of this giant!

Thumbs up Great work AirDar!!!

Hey AirDar ... that's awesome work you do! I really admire your 3-dimensional renderings as they look so believable. You can almost imagine it on the real airplane, just the way you have detailed everything. There's a lot of talent here in the forum, but yours' is definitely a cut above the rest, no offense to others. Not only do you take into account the design of the graphics, but you also consider the application on the given aircraft.

I think, that with your talent, you should be an airline consultant in the specialized area of paint schemes! Your work looks better than half the stuff out there flying. Too much corporate bureaucracy at work, which obviously spills onto the aircraft in the form of poor artwork and graphics.

Keep it up dude!!!

Dar!

Both A&B look great, but I personally like the 2nd one.
It looks more balanced. Yes, I would love to see this
CX A380 in real life...

Great job,
Benjamin

Excellent work once again, Dar! While #2 does give a better sense of overall balance, it also introduces another interesting effect: the "Zorro Effect!" OK, the term may not be the best, but I like it better than my first thought, the "Bandito Effect."
I think you get my point none the less; with the raised cheatlines and nose art, the plane appears "masked." Maybe Landor had more in mind when they made the specs...

Exclamation Whoa!!!

Where did that photo come from? Was it more recent than AirDar's rendering, or what?

It's almost identical to Dar's except for the engine color scheme ... was the photo from a trade show or Airbus display at some airshow recently?
