What if UAL 747sp made it to advertising during
the "Friend Ship" advertising campaign? It may have looked like this! All Aircraft blanks, airline logos, typography, and graphics images, ie: all vectors shown, and layout design are done from scratch in Adobe Illustrator CS3 and Photoshop CS3. Enjoy!

All I can say is "wow" ... just fantastic there Herb ... beautiful choice of color scheme ... one of my all time faves on the 747 ... I prefer this than the multi-colored Saul Bass version ... this is way classier!!!
Also, just curious ... how long did it take you to do that?

Thanks Mariner The Mainliner scheme came to mind first, but the black titles, stars, and Friend Ship scheme really got my attention the most. The Saul Bass is okay, but this one kind of sums of the retro seventies image of UAL...and it was friendlier skies back then. Time to produce this involved a complete tear down of the metal skinned AAL ship, and other little tweaks from the original. I would say about ten hours....?? give or take. The original was done over a few days.

Great work, Herb! I just started playing around with the trial version of Illustrator CS4, and all I can say is that I'm absolutely blown away with its capabilities! And that's coming from someone who previously had no experience using a vector graphics program (I've been attempting to see how much I can get done on a new 727 template before the 30-day trial runs out). Just out of curiosity, what work do you do on a profile in Photoshop?

Thanks Andy,
Enjoy CS4~ I'm reading up on it now. I'm sure you'll like working in vectors. You should have no problem finishing off your 72 and perhaps a few others as well. I use P-shop for various detailing effects...all found through trial and error, and reading.
Good Luck, and looking forward to your rebooted 727-200!

Thanks, Herb! I really don't know if I'll have enough time to finish this puppy before the trial runs out, but I'm trying my best with the time that I have. I realized that since I can add so much more to the profile in Illustrator, a simple trace of the old 727 just wouldn't be nearly enough to satisfy me. Thus, I've been spending a TON of time looking over reference photos on A.Net. It's pretty much like I'm doing this thing completely from scratch. I LOVE the way the new nose section and cockpit windows have come out so far, but the wing is giving me fits. I hate doing wings. But yes, I'm loving working in vectors! In fact, I've already determined that I enjoy it more than raster graphics! It's just unbelievable how limiting working in raster was for me. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what else you've got in the pipeline!

I just found your AASP ... as opposed to AARP? Anyways, all joking aside, that's another beauty the way you have finished off the metal surfaces ... almost photorealistic!
Thanks for sharing your great work!
And if you ever need an "agent" ... you know who to call ...

Best to start from scratch to learn the program. You'll find your own "way" to work w/the software features. I just read a lot of books and articles to give me tips on making better art. Might as well start fresh and build out! Best of Luck and keep us posted. Your 72 is well done...and yes..wings will give you a fit!

Kind words Mariner...Thank you~! May need an agent. Recently got an invite to do some schemes for large corporate airliner twins. More news to follow.

Too bad no one saw fit to take side shots during production.

Mariner,
I ran across this thread again on Google and wanted to post the task that got me started with metal surfaces. It was for the Lear 60XR. The first flying prototype was done in multiple finishes that were a lot of fun to develop. A mix of Illustator and Photoshop. I try to keep my work looking like a drawing and not photo real. Sometimes the work falls in between the two.
After this piece came the AA SP. I may put a few prints back on Ebay for kicks. They were never money makers but made a lot of enthusiast contacts.
In the meantime, here's the Lear. Enjoy.
