Default AA Caravelle

In 1960, during a jet-powered-aircraft buying spree, American Airlines augmented its recent fleet of prop-jet Electras (which at the time was being structurally strengthened at the plant in Burbank, California) with the famous short-range pure jet, the SE-210 Caravelle.

With this introduction, CR Smith agreed to adopt a special paint scheme. This included a white painted upper fuselage, a first for AA, and blue underside. The wings were painted red, emulating British European Airways' new look.

AA beat United's Caravelle service (July 1961) by about a year.
