Continuing a series on aircraft that were ordered/considered but never entered service with a particular airline, here's the next subject- the Western Airlines 767-200. In Western's final years after deregulation, they had on order 6 767-200s but in the wake of the 1987 Delta merger, the orders were cancelled. As a matter of fact, manufacturer's serial numbers weren't even assigned to the Western order. Western Airlines, founded in 1925, was a well-run and well-entrenched carrier in the US West that in the years after deregulation, stood out as well-run and in a solid financial position- this was due in part to the long traditions at the corporate level established by Terrell Drinkwater, Western's chairman in it's formative years from 1947 into the late 1960s. Drinkwater is credited with saving Western as it had overextended itself in an overoptimistic forecast of the postwar boom. Drinkwater was well-known even then as a brash young executive who, while at Continental, tried to oust the legendary Robert Six for control of Continental. Western's merger with Delta in 1987 gave Delta what it needed most- a western foothold and a national route system. Few airline mergers have seemed as sensible as the Western-Delta merger- Western was the dominant airline in the US West and Delta as a dominant airline in the South. If you look at their route systems in the mid 1980s, there's little overlap and it was the acquistion of Western that made Delta into a major player in the domestic market. The baremetal "Bud Lite' livery represented the final colors of Western Airlines and despite its simplicity, it's one of my favorite retro looks. Had the merger not taken place in 1987, the six 767-200 order would have been filled and they would have worn the Bud Lite livery. They might have even replaced Western's DC-10s on the LAX-HNL runs once ETOPS ratings came into use. Enjoy!

This is really wonderful to see Doc. My family used to fly Western quite often and I really miss those "The ONLY way to Fly!" Adverts on the TV. The "Bud Lite" colors look very smart on the 767. If Jet-X ever makes good on a fantasy model of THIS, I'll be in line for one... right behind you!
You are getting quite good at your baremetal surfaces... I like all the panel definition and color variation. Superb job! One of these days, I'll start illustrating along with you again... I'm on a hiatus for a while... REAL jobs are keeping my leasure time illos from getting done. ![]()

Fantasy model or "Near-reality" model? I'd consider it a valid candidate for production IMHO...

Hey Doc, great job on the Bud Lite 767.
Here's a neat twist on history. What if Delta was bought out by Western. We could see a Western DC-9, 757, 767, 727(of course), and in addition to their DC-10 spaceships, they would have a very large L-1011 fleet (with DL registration numbahs). Oh and DC-8s too as Delta still had their -71 and -73s still in service in 1987. Doc, these sure would look great if you painted em.

Hey guys, thanks for all the compliments on this one. I would absolutely kill to see this in 1/400 (the fantasy model naysayers can kiss my feathered you-know-what!). The biggest challenge on this one were the baremetal surfaces- as Dar can attest to this, I tinkered with a variety of variables for quite some time before coming with a realistic look.
David, no promises, but you offer up some interesting alternatives. We'll have to see what I've got the time for in between the things I'm working on now. I'm a fan of the 757 myself and a Western Bud Lite 757 sounds mighty appealing......

Doc -
Man I am sorry. I saw the word Bud Lite and went out back and had two 12 packs. I don't remember what happened next but my Jeep is on my roof, the dog won't come out from under the bed, and there is frozen Green Jello everywhere. Truth be told, I just love your pretty Western 767 picuture and I love DAC, and I love Texas. OK - perhaps I am putting it on too thick about the Texas part, but you have to admit that saying that Texas sucked was a cheep shot. Although there is some truth in that statement. |
