Default Las Vegas: Airliners International Convention

There has been talk on another thread about the recent Airliners International Convention held in Milwaukee and its poor turnout. For those that are unfamiliar with this show, it has been the elite show for the past 20plus years for the airliner enthusiast but has been dying a fast death in the last couple of years due to internet sales and ebay. It appears that location, location , location mean everything for a rebirth and bigger turnout. It was also said that cities like LA, Phoenix and Vegas are much better choices. Threfore:

Tell that lazy director of ADI (Mr. E. of Gemini Jets) to get off his high horse and lazy ***, and stop worrying about what color the wallpaper should be in the ladies bathroom and organize a big one for Vegas!

And all you geeks with your stupid airport ramp tours stay home and play with your kids... forget it! I'll arrange tours of the chicken ranch in which we can get our tubes cleaned! Now show of hands whose in???? Well I AMMMMMMMMMM

I'd be game, Russell. Anytime you mentiion Vegas I'm there. I just hope it wouldn't be a dud like the last regional show there in 1998. Kleinski and Brian Ward were there and it was combined with a railroad show. Unfortunately there was a NASCAR race going on at the track and me thinks many peeps went out to watch the crashes at the track. It was a flippin' ghost town at the show. It was held at the Palace Station Casino Hotel and it was a blast before and after the show, but during the show I went to the bar and started sucking on the bottle because it was so dead.

Las Vegas sounds like a hot idea in more ways than one. Ya the temperature but there is so much to do there.

The regional show was in 1999, by the way, it was my first time there and I have been back two times since and look forward to going again. Great place.

Yes, it is unfortunate the shows have been dropping off since 9/11 even though Stacy and Andrew did their best in MKE it was a little low in attendance maybe because it was in MKE but I had agood time anyway as I always do. The ramp and YX (Midwest) tour was very good.

Washington sounds ggod for next year then if at LAS that should get it going again.

Thumbs up Boxing match in LAS!!!!

YIPPPPPEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

Does that mean fighter will be:

Dan Asher v.s. Dragon Wing?

Put kidding aside......

I am not so sure whether location is the answer?

I believe it have to be all combine with the availability of where show is being held in a certain place that offer more other things than just the show?

I have been to two regular shows. Never been to International show.

ATL and LAX. LAX wins over ATL. Why? Because there is In-N-Out that you can enjoy the World's Most Exciting airplane landing and take off in that closest range you can see!!!!!!! Meet some people that we met here. ATL there is nothing others than the show? Unless I am left out of your "embarrassment" list that do not want me to partipicate? I undy......No Problem.....

LAS as International show? Considering the Casinos, GJ Warehouse, Stripper clubhouses, and etc etc etc..... Maybe a good place to shoot that goal?

Secondly, I suspect there is a greater possibilities that vast of collectors lives in west than the east which is why shows is always good over there?

Location and the amount of aviation collectors might be the answer?

Dude, GJ is next to a strip joint! We'd whack 2 birds with one stone!

But then again, that could be one hell of a financial dilemma if it came down to one or the other.

I live 45 minutes from Vegas. AmericaWest has a direct flight from SBA and I'd definitely be there.

I could not get the time off work to attend the convention this year but an opinion expressed to me may explain, in part, why attendance was off. Europeans, for example, will find it difficult to travel with their goods to cities inside the United States where they must change planes, make conections, etc...
It is easier to travel to Los Angeles on one flight than change in Chicago to catch another flight to Milwaukee. Los Angeles is farther to travel for some but is easier to get to. This makes the east and west coast cities are more attractive. Chicago is another possibility because there are direct flights from Europe.
A postcard/paper dealer told me he did better than expected although many tables went unsold. A diecast dealer I buy from was happy with the show because he had little competition. This is not good for collectors of course.
Collectors who choose to avoid a show simply because of ebay or internet sales forget they miss out on the posibility of picking up new models if someone shows up selling duplicates or even a collection. I personally would not consider Airline Conventions/shows unpopular yet.

Never have been to one but would go if in Las Vegas. Would it be held in the Sands Expo? Nice Convention hall! It is connected to the Venetian Hotel. Nice place. http://www.venetian.com/events/sands.cfm

A good reason for a dieying interst must be the fact that some manufacturers do not present shows surprises. Let say if there was a new model/livery presented as a show's item, that would move some collectors to attend. Another thing would be the fact that many sellers show about the same stuff show after show.

I wish there was a show where every member of DAC, Wings900, 400SH and Airlinebuzz would show up. NOW THAT WOULD BE A HECK OF A GATHERING!!!

....yes indeed.

PHX in 95 was great! Staying at the Camelback Inn was perfect. I never miss a chanch to get back to the desert, so Vegas would perfect! Any excuse to get out of this tropical 3rd world hell hole called Miami for a few days works for me!

With all due respect, that's b.s. Those same European cats were complaining in St. Louis in 1999 and Phoenix 2000 that they wanted an East Coast show to make it easier on them to carry their goods. When Miami rolled around in 2001 they couldn't be found. Hell, Virgin, Lufty, KLM, British, Air Farce, and Iberia serve MIA yet those cats didn't show.

Unless it's a huge show, fuhgeddaboutit! Costs too much money to rent it out. You'd have a little better luck renting out a banquet room or two at one of the off-Strip hotel casinos.
