Schaarschmidt
Dear all,
in the course of an historical study, I am trying to get information on a german aircraft model manufacturer called “Schaarschmidt”. In an article from 1928, I found a reference stating that this company provided an exhibition of several ~ 1:20 models on a fair in Vienna. The address is given as “Schaarschmidt Flugzeugmodellbau (Meuselwitz in Thüringen)“. Either the address was not reproduced exactly or the company may have moved later on – as is evident from this: At the moment, there is a Lufthansa Vickers Viscount model from Schaarschmidt dating in the 1950ies for auction on ebay. On the model there is a sticker stating “Made in Germany – Modellbau Schaarschmidt, Berlin-Charlottenburg, Goethestraße 68”. Some time ago, there was a post on this forum about Schaarschmidt, but it doesn’t contain much information. However, this is everything I know at the moment.
Is there anyone who could help me? Does anyone know anything about this company? I am looking for old brochures, lists of models, pictures of the company/models – with main focus on the 1920ies and 1930ies. Is there any expert on this topic, a former employee or any archive, institution, company, museum,… who might know anything or may have collected historical documents? I am very thankful for any piece of information!
Many thanks and best regards!

Re: Schaarschmidt
We all would love to learn more about Schaarschmidt, but there is not much known about this company.
Unfortunately they never reached the popularity of Verkuyl or Raise Up, where already some records were published on Internet.
Available information regarding Schaarschmidt is practically zero.
It is interesting to read about a company with same name being filed already in the 20's in Thueringen.
The company we are talking about was for sure allocated in West Berlin. But it may be possible, that the owner settled from east Germany to West Berlin.
No catalogues from Schaarschmidt exist, according to my knowledge.

Re: Schaarschmidt
Schaarschmidt being located in Thüringen is new to me also! Great information! I always thought the company came into existence after World War 2 because what we mainly see from Schaarschmidt is props and jets from the post-war era.
Here's a Schaarschmidt-thread I started in 2008:

Re: Schaarschmidt
I am lucky to have this Air Canada in my collection. I am also aware of the Trans Canada Airlines Viscount version by Schaarschmidt. Don't know about the details of the company. However, their cast fuselage and sheet metal wings is quite unique in the model making industry.

Re: Schaarschmidt
By now, I have found several historical articles on the activities of Schaarschmidt at the Vienna Aircraft exhibition in 1928. Most often, the company name is given as "S. Schaarschmidt" and once as "H. Schaarschmidt". However, the latter one is given in an advertisement in the official catalogue of the exhibition. It states:
******************************
Flugzeug Ganzmetall- Präzisionsmodelle
sämtlicher Flugzeugtypen
liefert
H. SCHAARSCHMIDT Flugzeugmodellbau
Flugtechnische Lehrmittel
Meuselwitz in Thüringen, Deutschland
******************************
However, the historicians in Meuselwitz have no documentation on this company at all. This is very strange...

Re: Schaarschmidt
I have put a lot of effort in this research and finally found some information which I wrote down in my newest book about aviation history (it deals with a former aicraft producing company in Austria called "Avis" - more information given on "Avis" Flugzeug- und Autowerke). However, if there are any news: I am always happy for any new piece of information!

Re: Schaarschmidt
There are some interesting news somewhat concerning my research mentioned here: To remind people of aviation history and to communicate my studies, I am rebuilding one of the aircrafts described in my book ( http://www.avis-werke.at) detailed in scale 1:2, which will be presented at Red Bull Flugtag 2012 in Vienna. For more information and soon some pictures visit AVIS | Facebook - and thank you very much for clicking "like" there
