Default Advice Needed

I'd like to begin a diecast plane collection for my newborn grandson and maintain it through the years. I know nothing about this field. Which manufacturer would be best? The parents are a little worried about things made in China. Which scale would be best? Large enough for a child yet small enough not to get too overwhelming. What about a theme? We aren't really military people. I appreciate all input. Oh yes, I'd like to not go above the range of $40-60 for one item. Many thanks. GGrandmaMJF

I would stay in the 400 scale range as size will definately come into play over the years...200 scale is coming on strong but takes up a lot of room...As for brand there are dozens, buy what you are looking for! As for paint issues, these are not toys for children to be playing with..they are mostly for display, therefore your grandson should probably not even handle these until he is old enough to handle them without breaking them...

Good advice from Crown Vic! I would also add that items made in China used to be inferior, but they are now rated amongst the best quality in many fields, including diecast models. Their fine attention to detail combined with fairly cheap labour makes China a very attractive manufacturing country. Very surprised Crown Vic didn't mention Gemini Jets in his appraisal
