I picked up this model a few years ago in Melbourne. It is a Cathay Pacific Convair with base. I think it is 1:200, and it is heavy. The base has written on it 'Convair
I have been unable to find anything like it searching on the internet. The paint is in pretty terrible condition, and before I get it painted/ restored I would like to try to find out a bit more about it. Anyone know anything? PS I have pictures, but the 28KB (ie pretty small) picture I tried to upload 'exceeded forum quota'. ???? |

Many thanks for your reply - I appreciate it. It seems my attachments are working now - I hope they help?
To fix the paintwork - do you have any advice for me? i.e. do you redo or restore... This is the only model I will ever own, and would hate to learn by mistake... ![]() |

Nice Find!
The web site I would recommend is; AVIATION MODELS. Look up the Fred Cox DC-8 collection and he can recommend a place that does this kind of work. He uses them for his aircraft as well. Good luck, and if you do get it restored, please post some pictures. |

Yours is a real Convair 880
I recently got this one NMIB - wing span is 14" and maker is Tomiyama. ![]() ![]() If you look closely you will note that it's really a DC-8.

This model is 100% an original 1/200 metal CONVAIR FACTORY MODEL and not a Verkuyl. This stand was used only by Convair.
Just wanted to let you know. Kind regards. ModelLover |

ModelLover - I'm v interested - what does a factory model mean? Excuse me, I know _nothing_ about models. I gather Verkuyl is a brand (perhaps no longer in operation?)... but factory model? Is there anyway of finding out for sure? I think the logo on the stand is the most defining feature..
I will take it, probably to get repainted, to UML (Universal Models) in Hong Kong, and hope for the best. I'm sad the paint won't be original anymore, but it's really seen better days. I am excited there is some recognition of this plane. The pictures posted of the TWA look a little different, in that there is a join between the wings & the fuselage. On the convair there is no join (i.e. all one piece) and of course no wheels. Thanks for the advice - and Kung Hei Fat Choi!! |

A factory model means the model was made by the Convair Factory as a giveaway to potential or real clients of this airplane.
Verkuyl was another great modelmaker in Holland... The model is very nice and I would never ever repaint it, looks vintage to me, that's what counts, repaint it and it will just be a piece of old metal. Zajzien. Kind regards. ModelLover |

I would make a potential restauration depending on the possibilities. As far as I know, there are no commercial (professional) decals available for CV-880 in 1/200, and THAT makes it difficult. A pure paint job is not recommended. Looking to the model, the paint does not look that bad. A replacement of the decals could do it, provided you can remove the old ones and have good ones for replacement. |
