Hi Folks,
during my summer vacation this year I made a trip to east Germany including a visit to Dresden. It is a wonderful city with plenty of famous buildings and very impressive. But it has also a nice tiny museum on transportation, which includes a small collection of airline display models. These are -of course- mostly eastern types. They are all built, as far as I could see, by the "Verkehrshochschule Dresden", i.e. the local "Highschool for Transportation". Material used should be resin, wood and fibreglass. Have a look! |

I just love that cut-away of the Il-18!
I have a toy of the 1959 Orient Air Lines, below, that I bought new in CDG in '83. The real plane was called Baade 152, but the toy has Orient Air Lines titles and no mention of Baade probably either because the prototype crashed or else it never went into service and nobody remembered it.

Great shots Flieger. Do the students make the models as part of their coursework?
I have always been fascinated by the Baade 152- where else can you find a high wing airliner with tandem engines underslung, and bicycle landing gear (true heir of B-47?)? Isn't it about time we see a new mould of this in 1:400? -Danny Samuels Last edited by samu990; 08-14-2005 at 12:48 PM. |

This little tin plate toy of the Baade 152 was made in the GDR and partially also exported. The Airline is fictional, I guess. When you ever have a chance to visit east Germany, go to one of the popular flew markets, then you may find one of the older VEB and Russian tin plane toys, such as IL-14, AN-24 and so on for reasonable price. |

Hope, their real planes were also made by using aluminium, and not only wood, resin and fibreglass.. ![]() |

Fantastic pictures! Many thanks for posting them. I have many Interflug models including a 1/72 IL62M. When I visited the DDR in 1987 there was
a large scale IL62 model on display in an Interflug showcase at the Alexanderplatz rail station, it looked similar in size to your pic and it was shown suspended above a half globe. During a visit to the Interflug HQ in Berlin they had a giant IL18 at the entrance to the premises along with another giant IL62 and Tu134A. It would be nice to think that the models you saw are survivors from that time or earlier. The case of miscellaneous types you show look like the projects under consideration by the VEB for aircraft construction before the "fraternal Soviets" decided that it was not in their interests to have the DDR turning out possible competitors to their airliners, and DDR military types were never to be allowed.

gnaydock, many thanks for those You Tube links. Being a fan of the Baade 152 they were the first time I've seen moving footage of the aircraft. I recently (yesterday) recieved a 1/72 scale 152 model from the Pilot Station model company in France. Pilot's Station, its in the silver 2nd prototype colours and is stunning. I'd recommend their models to anyone

Interflug,
You are quite welcome. I've always been perhaps unduly impressed with this aircraft. It's ashame it never went into production. If you think about it, it kind of reminds me of the Canadian Avro C-102 which also never made it into production. I have also seen on some German 152 website that a group is in the process of restoring a real 152. Would love to see a photo of your model if you wouldn't mind posting it. I'm afraid I'm having some problem navigating Pilot's Station as French is not one of the languages which I'm familiar with. What might I ask is your interest in Interflug? I'm facinated by the whole GDR thing myself. Kind regards, Gerd

gnaydock,
Happy to post pic of Baade 152 very shortly, having focus prob with the digicam just now but hope to fix soon...keep watching. You should find that by clicking on the Union Jack flag on the Pilots Station site you will get around ok. My interest in Interflug and the DDR goes back to the mid 80s when I was working in civil aviation and as my work involved load control and flight planning. A group of us visited the Interflug HQ for a 2 day training course on the IL18 and Tu134 types for our handling of the flights in UK. We met some great people and had a good time and those memories and interests have stayed with me, they made us very welcome even though it was the so called "Cold War"! ![]()

Thanks. I did manage to find the Union Jack, unfortunately, did not find the Baade 152 on the site. Sold out? I have 1 Interflug plane in my collection - Phoenix TU-154 in 1:400. I was outbid on on a 1:400 Interflug IL-62 made by a what I believe is now a now defunct company (Schafer Collection?). I bought a CSA IL 62 in that scale. Remarkably similar to the VC 10 of which I have a vintage 70s BA. I'm in the process of getting a manufacturer's sample Air Kazakhstan IL-86 in the unusual scale 1:380. I'll post it when it eventually gets here. Right now I'm waiting for someone to produce a TU 134 in 1:400. Phoenix will have a 1:200 model available late this month, unfortunately it's done in new Aeroflot livery rather than that in the 70s and 80s. Be well!!

Thanks for the image, that is exactly the livery and reg on the model that I now have. I also looked for the 152 on Pilots Station and no luck although BAADE is still there as a search heading.....maybe they did sell out, they did tell me that only 20 models were made although that doesn't mean there won't be more in the future I guess. I hope to post image any day now. As for the Schaeffer IL62, I have seen that crop up on ebay Germany, just do search for Interflug..its amazing what turns up!
