This metal Air France Viscount is unmarked, but I have discovered that the manufacturer is Jouets Mont Blanc. It has an opening oval cabin door, passengers in the windows, and ugly blue props. The registration belongs to a plane that crashed in 1956, generally considered unfashionable on a model or toy airplane, then as now.

Anthony, do you know were one can find reference on how they made tin toy aircraft? This seems like a lost art.

I've got a Lufthansa like that. It's Modern Toys right, small version (there's also a huge version)

Hello Anthony,
You'll find information about your Viscount by Mont Blanc on this page : http://www.art-aviation.com/Air_france/JOUETS.htm Frederic Marchand, a french author, realized several (3) books about airplane toys. One of them, is about Air France toys. You'll find more information about toys (air france and all compagny and manufactors) on this web site on july. Regards, francois |

Thank You!
I have two of his books and I'm awaiting a third! He hasn't gotten back to me, yet ![]() Because of his books, I know the name of the manufacturer. This plane has no maker's mark at all.

..... I got this one today on Frankfurt-Schwanheim Swap event. Normally I am not in tin plate, but got it for low money. All functions are still working. It's amazing to see the props starting to spin one by one and then going up to full speed with the model running...fantastic toy. Maker is Schuco, Germany, production period 1957 to 1968.
Greetings Chris |

You are fortunate, that is a nice plane! It looks better than the 2 that I have. Also, Lufthansa really operated this type of plane unlike some of the other lines that Schuco represented.

The Lufthansa is the most common type of the "Radiant 5600", since it was targeted to the German domestic market. The other airlines Swissair, Air France, Pan Am, Sabena, KLM, BOAC and Hg Kg Airways were mostly done for export by not considering, that many of these airlines did not operate the Viscount. In the collector market they are much more expensive than the LH, the Air France e.g. is double in price, such as the Hg Kg.
By the way, did you know, that there will be a replica of the Schuco Radiant to be issued in the 4th quarter of 2005? It will be LH and the price is 200,- Euro in Germany. The production volume is limited to 1000 pcs (at least for the LH type.....) and they are all sold out already. I tried to get one on pre-order, but it was impossible. Luckily I found the real one now for an even lower price.... ![]() |

Schuco "missed the mark" with some opportunities for some real Viscount 800 airlines, such as BEA, Continental, South African and Ansett. Tomiyama issued a mostly plastic version in All-Nippon colors and also made it in Lufthansa and some other lines.
In the US the Lufthansa is more valuable than back home!

Hey gentlemen, let's not forget Trans-Canada Airlines and Air Canada that had one of the largest world fleets of Viscount 700's. Great aircraft ... nice models.

Hey folks!
We are speaking about tin plate toys, not accurate die cast models! How many childs rejected their Schuco Radiant below the Christmas tree by saying following words: "Moooom! I don't wanna have that plane! Pan Am never operated the Viscount!" Regarding the Japanese: I know about some famous copies from Japan, e.g. the Tomy "Talking Viscount" with the speaker inside the body. Frankly speaken, I prefer the original one from Schuco. Those Japanese copies have too much plastic and are kind of "overengineered". |

LineMar Toys' Capital Viscount, with retractable landing gear, and Tomiyama's Northwest Connie, both with original boxes.
Wing spans are 11".

I have one of each: PanAm,KLM and BOAC. These are the real things, made in Western Germany in the 50's and 60's.
