Default The China Clipper

This version of a Martin 130 "China Clipper" dates from the 1930s and was manufactured by a New Jersey firm called J. CHEIN that was still making things (Star Wars trash cans) in the 1980s. It features a a fairly realistic body combined with oversized pontoons and a motorized "fifth prop" in front.

I know that most people prefer scale display models but to me, this is a beautiful specimen.

OK, Richard, here is a later and more colorful Clipper dating from the early to mid 50s, the Southern Cross by Alps:

This monster, a so-called "DC-7" also by Line Mar Toys, has the wings of a Bristol Britannia:

I had never seen this cute and colorful little DC-2, probably by Alps, until I got it in late 2002:

A favorite jet liner, the graceful United Caravelle made by Tomiyama in the early 60s:

This imaginary airplane in imaginary colors is in heavy pressed steel by Wyandotte, 1954, #220. It looks a lot like a Twin-engined Stratocruiser:

Although not an airliner, this is probably my oldest tin airplane. It was made by the company Georg Levy in Germany around 1930:

On second thought I Guess it IS a liner after all, as it has cabin windows.

I'm awaiting arrival in the mail of this variant - this time a warped impression of an Eastern Connie in the original color scheme:

Thank for sharing all those pictures of fine tin planes.

I started a small collection of tin planes as a kid in the 60´
My mom bought me 3 planes type 707 in Pan Am, TWA, Flying Tiger Line.

They were made in the same way as this model on the pic. - Also the landing gear was the same (but only one on the fuselage).

The planes are gone by a long time, but maybe you could help me about make, company and country.

Maybe you have pic. of models

Best Regards

Default thanks for the pictures!!!!!!

Hi Anthony, the pictures are great. You should do a book or make a web site. I am back at work for the next few weeks and just got a new camera. So, when I go home I will post pictures of my collection. Mostly TCA stuff. If you you do a book I would buy one for sure.

Just about everybody made the Pan Am and TWA 707s. How big were the ones you had? Could be Alps, Momoya, Haji, Line Mar, Marx, or even a manufacturer that did not use a trade mark.

The Flying Tiger Line 707 is different. I've never heard of this one, but it may have been Marx or Toys Nomura. Both these firms sold Flying Tiger Line CL-44s that were the same or similar.

As a matter of fact Frederic Marchand in Paris has recently released his "Avions-Jouets II" which deals with the tin toy planes in the 1945-70 era. Judging from his first book, this one should be great!

Thanks for the info. Regarding the size of the planes - its hard to tell my hands was a bit smaller in those days, but i think about 5 - 6 inch long and the fuselage was mount together just under the cheatline.

Funny about the Flying Tiger Line - I remember it as a 707 as the others.

Thanks
