Default 1:600 Schabak Models

At diecastairplane.com we have specialized in carrying 1:500, 1:400 and 1:200 scale models in our commercial aircraft selection. We have been discussing adding Schabak 1:600 and 1:250 scale aircraft and would like to hear some feedback from DAC members. Are there many of you out there collecting Schabak models? If so can you find the models you want, or do you have difficulty finding places to purchase them? What is you overall feel regarding 1:600 scale models? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I first saw 1:600 Schaback models back in the early 1990s and I thought they were really neat and bought more than a dozen of them. Years later I have discovered the larger scale 1:400 models and the Schabacks have been relegated to storage and are toys by comparison. I prefer the larger scale with the detail and the far better graphics (rather than the decals, sometimes poorly applied).
The positive thing about the Schaback line is that they have produced some models (like the F-28 and ATR-100) and more variety of Garuda than I have seen in 1:400 scale.

I did collect them in the 1980's and early 90's.
I always got them in toy-stores or if I couldn't find them then directly from Schabak.

Thanks for your feedback so far. We have begun to carry the Schabak models at www.diecastairplane.com but are gearing them more towards young collectors which seems to be the best focus of these.

We often have parents looking for a variety of liveries for their kids and the real toy models don't offer a very wide line and the collector 1:400 and 1:500 series are too easily broken. I'm always surprised at the phone calls I get saying that someone wants to return the GeminiJets she bought as they are broken. When I ask how it happened I find that she bought them for a six year old and the kid just broke them right away and so the mom is not happy and is returning the models. I had a bunch come back in a zip lock bag once.

This makes me cringe as I dislike seeing these beautiful models trashed when their are so many serious collectors looking for them. So hopefully we can steer parents of young kids to the Schabak line to keep the kids happy and inspire an interest in collecting for the future, but keep the best models safe as well.

Schabaks are the first planes I've ever owned.. I agree with you that they are a great start to the "future collectors"...

I have only ever had one Schabak model and it is the worst piece of Junk ever. You have to put the wheels in yourself when the engraved hole is way too small, they have stickers not paint and it totally sucks.

Give it to a three year old. If it lasts less than 60 seconds then it's S***

No, this is a wonderful, all metal TOY plane made in the 50s and not some contrived "collector model."

I'm sorry but even if it is a Childrens TOY plane it sucks badly

Whatever floats your boat, you certainly have a right to your opinion, but I still think it's a great classic toy plane.

I could not believe just how bad the 1:250 were when they came out. I vowed then to never allow my eyes to see such ugliness again. Except those fine mountain women on Jerry Springer.

, love those thunder thighs in mini-dresses! Sort of like a 747-400 in a natural metal paint scheme ...

I think that schabak would be perfect for the collector age 7 and up, as for the younger ones, I think those cheap little sets that come with hot-wheels sized GSE and a plane that is a bit too tiny would be nice for them, they can take more abuse than most collectables. But they are sorta funny, there was a UA one with a MD-11 and a 744, and the MD-11 had the 747's window line and vice versa, imagine, a MD-11 with a upperdeck.
