Cool OT: Yamato 1/48 Scale Macross Toys

Seen in the U.S. as the first cycle in the animated TV series Robotech, these fully transformable toys are based on designs from the movie, Macross: Do You Remember Love.

Thumbs up Macross Rules!

I am a huge macross fan! Watched it faithfully when I was in Public School when it first aired. Have yet to aquire one of these 1/48 scale masterpieces! Always thought about doing a display base for these as well, in the future and other Robotech stuff. Wish they would make some ground equipment for this as well! That would be cool.

Default I would prefer something smaller...

The detail on these toys is outstanding, and they could certainly mix it up with some of my 1:48 scale helicopter gunships, but I would prefer to have something in a smaller scale. There are comparable Yamatos available in 1:60 scale...

F! YEAH!!! The VF-1 has always been the definative transformable toy! These are AWESOME! I especially like the way you captured Max's style of combat posture in the first set of images!

Anyone seen Macross Zero? The flying scenes will blow you away!

Default But I would love them in 1:72 scale...

Currently the only Yamatos in 1:72 scale are the Macross Plus OVA series (sort of like the competitive fly-off that resulted in the selection of the F-22 Raptor or the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, only with aliens and giant robots, of course) line.

Cool stuff Gavman...

I always thought it was clever that the YF-11 looked like a Queadeluun Rau when in Battroid mode. Funny though, only female Zentradi flew the -Rau and Guld was most DEFINATELY NOT female!!!

If memory does not fail me, Max had a mostly blue Valkyre, like the 1/60 model in this thread; this 1/48 version looks just like Roy Fokker's only with blue stripes. Was there a movie showing this livery or is it only my imagination?

and by the way, these wonderful pictures only entice me to buy them....after long months of agony and doubt....

"where should I put them?"
"are these JUST toys or models?"

Robotech was an important part of my childhood!

There WAS a movie... "Ai- Oboete Iimasuka" or "Do you Remember Love?" The Valkyrie's were redesigned and tightened up, with super armour added. It was a kind of chronicled condensation of the whole Macross first season before the "rebuilding" episodes... they changed many things but the core story was the same. It still holds up visually as a high point in animation, Japanese or otherwise and is VERY worth seeing. VERY exciting fight scenes and the pathos is THICK!

The recent Sci Fi Channel Battlestar Galactica mini-series (TV pilot?), made quite a number of changes in storylines, characters, costumes, and mecha design since it was not a continuation from where the original TV series had left off, but a reworking of the story in an attempt to draw in new fans. This was also the case with Do You Remember Love and the Macross TV series, although the changes in DYRL were probably made more to take advantage of the movie's bigger budget. Some viewers of DYRL like to think of it as a movie produced in the Macross Universe as a chronicle of the first Zentradi war to explain away the discrepancies (crazy Hollywood moguls!).

And of course, Robotech is the amalgated creation of Carl Macek of three unrelated shows, Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada, whose only real connection to each other prior to being joined at the hip by Macek's version of Protoculture was their transforming mecha: Macross - fighters; Southern Cross - tanks & helicopters; Mospeada - fighters & motorcycles. Macek needed to join the three shows together because he couldn't sell an English-dubbed version of Macross to the North American syndication market because 36 episodes wouldn't be a long enough run to warrant the investment. But 85 episodes of Robotech could make fans of us all!

Thanks Gavin for the information. Suddenly, by looking at this thread, I have the impression of being in some other forum (namely "SCIFI collector").

Back to the point: I went to an anime toy shop where they had some valkyres for sale, and I saw the "Max" version, but I noticed it was missing the insignia and the "serial number", which are supposed to be printed on the side of the cockpit. At first I thought it was a problem with a particular batch, but then, looking closely at these photos here, I realised the copy shown is also missing those printed details!!!

I guess I am not the only picky collector who has noticed this?!.....If it wasn't because of this, I would have already bought the model, SORRY, toy!

That's because those markings are stickers. Only *wings* get them printed on. Nose, tail, etc use stickers. They're there, you just have to apply them yourself.

I believe that this is the sticker sheet that David is referring to:
