Wink OT: PHOTOS! "to boldly go where no man has gone before"

I have to admit this is quite off topic, but hey, I am happy with this new model and wanted to share it with everyone!

This is a 1/850 kit of the Enterprise NCC-1701 (motion picture version) by Japanese manufacturer "Bandai". Following the Gundam robots, this set is also "glueless"...yes, it is a "snap fit"!!

and as I am not an experienced model builder, the prepainted parts where a perfect chance to try and make a nice StarTrek model without investing in time and money (wasting kits)....

although a snap fit, parts are ...abundant!

...basically, the model is supposed to pose on its base, and lit up like the ship in the movie...here I am trying to assemble the not-so-easy circuits and light supports. This is the first time I do a StarTrek model, and the first time ever I try to do sth with "lights"!

the clear plastic parts on the left of the picture are the light conduits, that spread the light from small lightbulbs evenly across the hull.

it is amazing how the entire model (measuring more than a 1/200 jumbo) is lit up with only six lamps: two in the saucer, two in the secondary hull and one in each engine nacelle....all "windows" shine warmly, suggesting a comfortable environment in the dark space

under a desktop lamp, the lights inside are still visible (three AA batteries hidden in the stand to the trick)
apologies for the messy background...

OK, that is one cool model!
I usually shy away from the hoards of crappy Enterprise models out there but this one looks to be a winner.
Do you mind if I ask how much it cost and if it available online somewhere?
Thanks for the pix, they are great!

some online retailers (on google, I typed "NCC-1707"+Bandai+850)

http://www.ehobbies.com/mo-ban-16192.html
http://www.internetmodeler.com/2003/...an_ncc1701.htm
http://www.bandai.co.jp/releases/J2003041501.html (in japanese)
http://matrixcollectibles.site.yahoo...rtreken18.html (listed price over 70 US$!!!!)

I paid the equivalent of 55US$ in Taipei....and spend half my saturday cutting and assembling the pieces.

when finished, this model measures a bit longer than a 747 in 1/200, but it is narrower.

I bought this particular enterprise because it saves me the pain of painting (I have no airbrush) and potentially screwing up everything. the finish on this relatively small model is quite good, and even the complicated nuances in colour (known as "aztec pattern") on the surface have been faithfully represesented.

some patience and a good instrument is needed to separate the pieces from the runners (i screwed up some...in not so visible areas)...that is almost the most chalenging thing about this model after the circuit mount hidden inside the secondary hull. I guess a model builder with some experience can put up this little enterprise in no time and with much better results than myself.

1/850?

Paul, you´re a wimp - 1/200 rules! You can´t put it besides your models and play "StarTrek IV: Voyage Home "

Anyway, looks good!

I found this website after I completed the model...there are lots of pictures of the actual NCC-1701A used in the Star Trek movies...and I still am amazed at how many details on the film prop were squeezed into the desktop model!

http://www.starshipmodeler.com/trek/....htm#wall_enta

I should put breaks on starship modelling or I will ruin my entire life! First there was 1/500, then 1/400, later I went into 1/200, after that, 1/72 warplanes....now bloody Starships!

Nobbe, a 1/200 Enterprise would be longer than my bed...I don't think that would be playable anymore.
Interestingly, I placed an 1/500 CX 772 besides the 1/850 enterprise and suddenly I realised how big that spaceship is supposed to be! even a A340-600 (in that 850 scale) would measure like a quarter of the "warp engines".

Thanks B-huj!
I did a Google search and found one for $59, so I bought two, another Christmas gift out of the way.
Thanks for the info.

Default Superb model

B-huj

I have to say, I was impressed with this model, so much so I did a bit of basic effects with Photoshop.

Hope you don't mind.

wow...

thanks for making an "improvement" on my casual photo of the model.
just to let you know (all all of u who read this...) that I have just finished another Enterprise: NCC-1701E, another pre-painted kit from Bandai. I get more satisfaction from these squeeze-fit models than the traditional file-n-glue-n-paint-n-decal type.

Ozz and other guys do a better job at good old traditional model-making!

if people don't mind, I may post some pics of the Enterprise -E here as well.

Mr Pants,

I have taken some photos, but I think they look like flying sh*t, so I am not posting those now.

Will spare some time and take better photos when I have more time. Work is taking up my time.
