Default A little BOAC 747 nostalgia

Back in 1970 when the BOAC 747 came into service the only way you could get a model of it was to make an Airfix kit or buy a little Matchbox Skybuster.

There was another way, and this is a little tin model which recently appeared on Ebay.

Not until Gemini Jets released their 1/400 model could you get an accurate model in metal in the UK

I can well remember one Christmas, when I was given the Airfix BOAC 747-100 which was ready built by my uncle. He was a very good modelmaker, an absolute perfectionist. It seemed huge, but then I was extremely young back then. I can also remember, prior to its entry into service, saving up empty Smiths crisp packets to get a model kit of a Pan Am 747, complete with stick on decals. Happy memories.

Sadly, both that lovely Airfix model, and my Uncle are now long gone, but I'm fortunate to own a Westway 1/100 BOAC 747, my all time favourite livery on the 747.

Remember saving up the 19/6 (19 shillings and 6 pence) to buy the Airfix BOAC 747 I lusted after. As a 12 year old I then go into model shop, dither and walk out with the Airfix SR-N4 Hovercraft.

Why. God only knows.....
