Default B747 Cutaway project before pictures

Hi Folks,
Took a long time, but I finally have all the ingredients for a nice Fall project. Found this Cutaway, with the wings and lots of broken parts. Acquired new PW engines, stand etc.. and it should make for a great model. The engines and pylons are actually one piece by Space Models and are very strong.
I took a crash course at a local plastic store in restoring (De-fogging) the clear plexi and it should come out nicely.
The orange partitions and the seating colors are very close to being correct for the CP Orange B-747 or Qantas, as far as I know, but I have no data. Just word of mouth. If anyone has info or pictures that could help me out (regarding the inside) it would be of great help.
I talked to a lot of retired CP employees (on FB) and none had pictures or info on the cabin interior except most seem to recall some seat sections being orange, as well as orange partitions, and the lounge being a funky purple, which would match this model.
The inside is very solid and has no broken or moving parts. So, it is a clean canvas for me. The pylons have nice grooved in notches and should sink well into the wing root. I want to do anything, but BA or Air Canada, as long as the interior is close to a match.

Thought I would share.

Hi Al,

Hope all is well.

Looks like the makings for a great restoration model airplane indeed.

I'm sure that it will be fantastic once it's finally done.

Best Regards, Robert

What markings were on it when you first got it or was it exactly as it looks now? If this were an original CP Air model that would make it a very very rare specimin.

Why not make it a Lufthansa? They were the first European 747-operator. My Westway 1/72 model has an interior design very close to yours...

Where did you get that big 747 model from my friend??

If I had that in my 747 collection I would be king of the jungle, that would be the icing on the cake for my entire 747 collection...

I bought it exaxtly three years ago with its original shipping-crate from an antiques-dealer in Munich. Two weeks later the guy contacted me - and wanted to buy the model back again for even more money I gave him. No deal...

Of all the 1/72 westway cutaways out there i think the Lufthansa 747 models are more abundant. I had an extremely rare Continental black meatball 747 and that was extremely rare to come across. Others I have seen only one example of are AA 747 and United.

Hi 727pilot,

Wonderful model indeed and with the original shipping crate!

I'm sure that the antique dealer in Munich knows that he made a mistake in selling it.

Hold onto that beauty for sure for many years to come!

Hi Moin
I got it this way. It is primed and no markings. I just received some more pictures from the CP-Air and it is looking more and more that this was it. It would also be correct for a Qantas.
Do do the CP-Air orange, I would blank out (with filler that could be removed later) a small part on the stdb side to put the CP AIR markings.

I am still doing a lot of research. I want it to be right.

I also love the LH livery shown on this page. What a model!!!

write to Doug at Westway models and ask him if he has some Space model 1:72nd B-747-100/200 PW engines left over. I am not sure if I got the last ones. I would bet though, that you will score on this one.

Re the LH livery,
The seats are close but the partitions are totally different. Green for LH and orange on mine, (BA were white).
I think that the correctness of the partitions are more important. According to a CP employee, the seats were quite often moved around but the partitions would have remained the same.

Great project - I am looking forward to see new pictures. Have you considered the livery of the Olympic B747?

As for the Olympic, I would need to see a picture of the interior.

I was thinking of starting a new thread on this since this news below affects all of those that own a 1:72nd Westway Cutaway, but here it goes.

Further on this, I have now discovered that the cloudiness and pitting on the clear plexi is inside. Don't ask me how it got there. It apparently is caused by heat when a model is displayed in a store front window like a travel agency. So, I talked to Doug at Westway. He had seen this before. He actually tried to fix one by opening it (just recently), but he told me that it was a waste of time and he wasn't successful doing it, and did all the work for nothing. I asked him if I could get new parts (new clear plexi to replace this one) and cut out the old plexi. He stunned me with his answer:
What I didn't understand was that the entire fuselage is made of a one piece clear plexi with a very thin layer resin compound added to to blank out the painted part and not the other way around (Resin with a clear plexi part added). This was a total surprise to me!. Doug explained it, and coming from him, it has to be.. So, I will do a CP Air orange by blanking out a bit of the forward stdb (to allow for the large CP lettering) and some aft on the stdb side, for a door. The port clear plexi is still in fairly good shape and it should still make for a great model, even if the stdb side is a bit more foggy.

Amazing what I have learned on this!

Your cutout are a different shape than mine and interestingly adds to the message I just posted regarding the entire structure being this way (clear that is, underneath). Gives me ideas!!! Maybe open up more of the interior.
Great model.

They are very interesting models indeed, Doug at Westway told me once that he thinks they were about 2000 made in the late 60s early 70s and he estimates they are less than 200 in existence of which quite a bit are in less than acceptable condition with interior/exterior damages.

Here is my model in Qantas colors, I wont let go of either even for a price.

I am very tempted to do the Qantas. A lot easier than the CP Orange and my blank's interior matches real good. I love the way they added a little resin and painted in some windows. That would take away some of the bad spots I have on that side. All kinds of ideas flowing through. Awesome! Could you send me some pictures of the port side. That is one great model!!!

I recently asked Doug for a quote on a 1/72 and 1/50 cutaway 747. Believe it or not the 1/50 was cheaper at 5500 GBP versus around 5800 GBP for the 1/72 because he no longer has molds for the 1/72 cutaway.

May I ask where you got your own 747 model from??

I was admiring the Lufthansa 747 from member '727pilot' but I have to say yours looks mighty fine as well...

I just have to put this on my wish list before I die one day, to also get me one of these fine looking cutaway 747 models..

Yes these cutaways were originally completely clear plexiglass models with the airline livery and windows, doors etc all painted on.

I have a 1:36 Westway Kuwait cutaway 747-200 which I picked up for $70 from a closing down travel agency. The model has had its share of battering and so far the wings and engines have been repaired/restored/repainted and now the fuselage remains to be done.

Some years ago, I had a 1/35 scale Piper Navajo Chieftain made by Executibe Display Models, with see through windows and a full visible interior. Brian Tompkins, the owner of EDM, told me at the time I ordered the model, that the detailing would be done by painting an otherwise clear Perspex fuselage after the internal detailing was done. I have one of his 1/35 Beech King Air 200s made the same way. I also have a 1/50 BEA Argosy freighter with clear flight deck and main deck windows. I assume this model was made in a similar way.

Closer view. Apologies for more additional posts with only one pic each. I can't seem to get the iPad to allow more than one image per reply. If anyone has a 'fix' I'd sure like to know. In the meantime......

Last one. It's an ingenious way to make these models, and no wonder they are so expensive
